The
2008 RHS Photographic Competition
THE 2008 RHS
Photographic Competition, supported by fine art publisher, The
Medici Society, is now open and awaiting entries from eager
photographers across the country. It’s an all new look to this
year’s competition, launched with 2 brand new categories. The 1st is
for budding young photographers entitled ‘In the Garden’ and
carries the accolade of becoming the RHS Young Photographer of the
Year. The 2nd is for aspiring card designers of all ages, in the
form of The Medici Award, accompanied by the ultimate prize of
seeing their photograph sold as a greeting card across the UK.
Young photographers (18 and under) can enter the brand new, ‘In
the Garden’ category, devised to inspire budding photographers
to venture outside and show us what they love about their garden or
local park. In turn, they could win the inaugural title of RHS Young
Photographer of the Year along with a top of the range digital
camera.
Possibly the cherry on the cake of this year’s competition is The
Medici Award, inspired by the competition supporters. Its aim is to
find the ideal greeting card image, short listed by the judges and
voted on by members of the public. Medici CEO, Graeme Derby,
explains further:- “We are always on the lookout for new and
exciting card designs and by developing this category, with its
winner chosen by the public, we hope to find that inspirational shot
that people will buy and send to their loved ones.
Buying a
card is an emotional practice and the card design must move its
buyer. Often the picture has to fit a specific purpose, Valentine’s
Day or a thank you card.
The colours are often bright and the focal
point must rest in the top half of the card, so when it’s on
display in a shop, the image is not hidden by the stack of cards in
front of it. It’s definitely an intriguing process we go through
when we buy a card, I think the old slogan, I saw this and thought
of you, sums it up best.”
Adult photographers are also invited to enter their pictures into
any one of the following categories, to be in with the chance of
winning £1,000 and the coveted title of RHS Photographer of the Year
- Plant Portrait, Garden View, Plant Close-up, Wildlife in the
Garden and People in the Garden.
The RHS Photographic Competition offers the perfect platform to
amateur and professional garden photographers who would like to
showcase their talents to the horticultural world.
Last year’s
competition attracted nearly 4,000 entries, the largest number since
its debut at RHS Garden Rosemoor in 1997.

DO
YOU DRINK IN THE BEST REAL ALE CLUB IN THE UK?
THE Campaign
for Real Ale (CAMRA) is asking club members and officials from all
over the country to consider whether their real ale club is good
enough to be considered as the CAMRA Club of the Year for 2009.
CAMRA Club of the Year Co-ordinator, John Holland, said:-
“There are thousands of clubs across the country that offer a
terrific place to enjoy a pint of good quality real ale and the
company of friends. Our annual Club of the Year competition is a
well regarded national contest to decide which club shows the
greatest commitment to high quality real ale. The winner of
the CAMRA Club of the Year Competition 2008 will be announced in May
but we are very keen to receive self-nominations for next year’s
competition now.”
The deadline for self-nominated entries is March 31 2008, and the
winner will be announced in May 2009. CAMRA believes that
Great Britain has around 30,000 clubs that could possibly enter the
competition. In 2007 Greetland Community & Sporting
Association in West Yorkshire won the title CAMRA Club of the Year.
The judges’ report said:- “This club is what a community
centre is all about – young and old mixing with the more sporty
types, whether it be outdoor or indoor events. Good quality beers
and fairly priced.”
Nominations should be sent to:-

Trust is one of the 'Better Performing' Trusts in Maternity
Review
IN the Review
of Maternity Services 2007 published last Friday by the Healthcare
Commission, Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has been scored
as one of the 'Better Performing' Trusts. Women praised the
cleanliness of the delivery and postnatal areas, gave us good
feedback on our strong safety culture and liked the feeling of
homeliness in the delivery rooms. This means that we have
"demonstrated good performance in some key areas which was better
than many other trusts, but where there is scope for improvement in
some areas."
Janette Brookes, Director of Operations said:- "While it is
very pleasing to have received this score, we are far from
complacent. We are now studying the review and focusing on
those areas where we can improve. Plans are being drawn up to enable
us to ensure that women receive the best possible care when they
choose to have their baby at Ormskirk Hospital which an increasing
number of women are doing." |
