‘LES ROSS’S DAY TRIPPER – SATURDAY 1 MARCH 2008
A very special
train, as it is the first one to be hauled by privately owned Class
86 electric number 86259 (originally E3137) since restoration to
main line running order following withdrawal by Virgin West Coast.
Now in its original electric blue livery which it wore when built in
1966, the locomotive is owned by BBC West Midlands presenter Les
Ross, who actually named the locomotive at Birmingham International
station 2002. The locomotive was a regular visitor to Liverpool Lime
Street from 1966 until displaced by more modern electric trains.
The ‘60’s’ feel to the train is completed by Class 47 diesel
47773 in two tone green livery (originally D1755 and subsequently
named ‘The Queen Mother’) being attached to the rear of the train.
As the entire train has to be turned after arrival at Liverpool to
allow 86259 to haul the train back to Birmingham, we are offering
railway enthusiasts in the North West a chance to travel behind both
locomotives on ‘The Turning Movement’.
Fares are just £25
standard class and £39 1st class (table for 2 an additional £15).
47773 : Liverpool (depart 11.44) - Newton-le-Willows – Golborne Jn-
Wigan – Preston.
86259 : Preston – Warrington – Crewe
47773 : Crewe – Weaver Jn – Liverpool (arrive 14.59)
