Under 9 -
Southport FC Juniors 6 Burscough FC Juniors 5
In an unbelievable
game we saw everything; saves, shots, tackles, great passes but most
of all goals and lots of them. This was an epic cup battle, end to
end, all out action.
Burscough settled the
quicker going in to an early lead when a throw in caught the juniors
flat footed at the back allowing W Jones in to score.
Burscough again went close this time Dempster saving well and C
Rimmer clearing of the line. As the juniors settled they eventually
drew level through L Harwood. Juniors then took the lead when M
Howard latched onto a great ball from C Rimmer to make it 2.1
Burscough then drew level again from W Jones who finished neatly.
Southport juniors then took the lead with a great goal M Howard
lobbing C Ward from a long way out. Burscough drew level straight
from the kick off with the best passing move of the game setting J
Howarth clear who beat the last man and tucked it away. 3-3 and full
time.
In extra time the
scoring never stopped, juniors took the lead again when L Harwood
finishing well after good work from J Edmondson.
Burscough came back again this time forcing L Dempster in to a save
that fell for W Jones who kept his calm to complete his hat-trick.
Southport Juniors took the lead again with another quality finish
from M Howard shooting low across C Ward into the bottom corner for
his hat trick.
Amazingly Burscough equalized again with C Smith and J Iliff setting
J Crook clear to score.
In the final minute this could have gone either way shots coming
from all angles and last ditch tackles There needed to be something
special to settle the tie. From nowhere J Edmondson produced the
magic needed, playing a perfect through ball over the last defender
straight to L Harwood to touch past the Burscough keeper for his hat
trick and victory. What a credit to both sets of players. If it was
possible to pick a man of the match then A Thorpe, who was back to
his best this week and gave a great performance, just edges it.
Under 10 -
Hesketh Colts Red 0 Rainford 5
Rainford Rangers
returned to Meols Park today to play Hesketh Colts Red. This was the
third meeting this season with the two previous matches ending in
stalemate.
Rainford started brightly with the wind in their favour and were
soon probing the Colts defences. Kieran Case, Ryan Jones and George
Reid made up the midfield trio and were combining superbly. Up front
Jake Arkell linked up well turning the defence looking for any
weakness.
The breakthrough for Rainford came on 8 minutes with a move that
began way back in the Rangers half. Callum Deemings headed clearance
found Danny Glover who sent an inch perfect ball for George Reid.
The midfielders dazzling skills took him to the goal line where he
cut an excellent pass back to the waiting Jake Arkell who sent a
thunderous shot into the net off the underside of the Colts
crossbar.
Rainford were really clicking today and maintained the pressure on
the resolute Colts defence. Next Ryan Jones cut inside past his
marker and set up Kieran Case to coolly slot home the ball to send
Rainford two up.
George Reid ignoring his coaches order to get the ball on the floor
and pass, went on an amazing dribble past 3 of the opposition taking
the ball deep into Colts territory and lobbing the defender with the
ball being sent out for a corner. Ryan Jones took the corner and
Jake Arkell was in the right place to control and then fire in an
unstoppable volley to send Rainford three clear.
Colts remained determined to get a foothold in the game with the
wide players running at the Rangers defence but Callum Deeming and
Danny Glover were in top form and keeping the attackers at bay.
There was a moment of magic from Morgan Benson five minutes before
the interval when the classy Colts striker finally found some space
just inside the Rainford area, his rasping shot seemed certain to
bulge the net. However Morgan Benson somehow parried the shot onto
the crossbar and then smothered the follow up shot. It could have
been a deciding moment as Colts would have been lifted and the
Rangers could have had a nervous last few minutes of the half. From
the clearance the superb George Reid was rewarded for his efforts
with a simple tap in and Rainford’s fourth goal.
The second half saw Callum Deeming don the gloves and Morgan Benson
resume up front. Sean Marsh and Scott Stoneley took up midfield and
defensive duties respectively. With the wind against Rainford they
set about the game as they had left off. Scott Stoneley was
anticipating the Colts every move and enjoyed some great possession.
Morgan Benson too, using his strength and pace to pressure the tired
Colts defence. Sean Marsh was passing intelligently to find his
teammates in space and George Reid was sending in dangerous cross
after cross.
It would have been fitting if Jake Arkell had completed his hat
trick but it was Morgan Benson who had the final say in the tie when
Danny Glover sent another fine pass through for Kieran Case whose
game today had been fantastic, unselfishly set up the striker to
claim his 14th goal of the season when he slotted the ball home from
three yards.
Hesketh Colts are always worthy opponents and the score slightly
flatters Rainford it may have been a different story today had
Morgan Benson not pulled off the wonder save in the 1st half. Thanks
also to the referee who was fair minded and always up with play. But
well done to both teams as they provided an excellent display of
Flair, team spirit and entertainment for the spectators.
Under 11 - Southport FC Juniors 6 Birkdale United 0
Southport returned to the scene of last weeks unlucky defeat to Town
Green to face another difficult encounter against Birkdale J who
more than matched them a few weeks ago when Southport were fortunate
to win the game 3-2.
Birkdale United J started off well and for the first 5-10 minutes of
the game were holding their own in this fast paced match.
Southport Juniors had a shot over the crossbar, which enticed them
to put Birkdale J under pressure. Some outstanding wing play on both
flanks from Robson Baldwin and Gary Grier on the left and Sam
Johnson and Owen Drummond on the right enabled Tom Rogers and
Anthony Brown to dictate play in the centre of the park and it was
not long before a goal came. Johnson sent Drummond free on the
right, his cross was inch perfect for Jorge Jones to place a shot
into the net.
Birkdale J responded well and winger Lewis Burrows worked extremely
hard in closing Southport down at every opportunity and defended
several corner kicks well and though
Birkdale came back at Southport, Robbie Handsford and Oliver
Cunningham kept it tight at the back and never missed a tackle. Liam
Aindow got a couple of good balls for Birkdale through to striker
Liam Jackson, but Southport defended well.
A shot from Southport was tipped away by keeper Dan Griffiths to
deny them but wing wizard Owen Drummond raced past two defenders and
smashed his shot high into the net to add to Southport's lead just
before the interval.
The second half saw Nick Knight in goal for Birkdale and was made to
work equally hard, Southport started the second half as they
finished the first and added two goals in as many minutes from
midfielder Gary Grier the first the pick of the two with a 25 yarder
that flew into the net like an exocet missile and gave the keeper no
chance.
Birkdale still came out all guns blazing and had chances to score
but were unlucky on several occasions.
The clock was ticking and Southport moved up a gear and punished
Birkdale further with Zack Evans and James Smith both adding to
Southport's goal tally just before the final whistle.
It was a game played in a very sporting manner In fairness to
Birkdale they had two key players out and this effected their team
enormously but Southport got their season back on track with a very
important win to move into second place, there could only be one Man
of the Match and that went to Gary Grier who's two goals tipped the
scales just ahead of Owen Drummond.
Formby 2 Town Green 3
In another top of the
table clash we saw an emphatic victory for Town Green. Both sides
started this match in turbo-charge mode and there was nothing to
separate either team. The deadlock was eventually broken through a
superb Callum Birchall goal that was the result of some beautiful
Town Green team play. Indeed, this outstanding team play is becoming
TG's greatest quality.
Formby revved their game up a gear and struck back with a brilliant
shot at goal. However, a fantastic save from TG keeper, Anthony
Caunce, parried the ball away only to be swooped on by Cameron
Rimmer who blasted into the back of the net.
With Formby keeping up the pressure, Josh Donson made a wonderful
tackle in midfield that found Kieron Turner. Turner passed to Jack
McGregor who played the ball back to Turner who laid on a perfectly
timed pass for Connor Tierney to blast into the top corner out of
the Formby keeper's reach.
Formby came out all guns blazing in the second half but it was Town
Green who scored again when Kieron Turner had a long range shot at
goal, which bounced over the oncoming keeper for Connor Stockwell to
run onto and coolly score.
However, Formby's persistent pressure paid off when they scored an
excellent second goal.
The last 15 minutes of this match were fraught with tension and TG
were under pressure to hold onto their lead. Some great defending
from the ever reliable George Newell, Rian Eades, Jake Beesley and
Theo Chrisokhou kept Formby at bay and they protected their goal
like Fort Knox.
TG withstood attack after attack to hold onto the win and maintain
their position at the top of the table.
This was a very physical match and the bravery of these boys today
belied the fact that we were watching an under 11's game of
football. Every player on the pitch played with commitment, passion
and maturity.
Town Green had many contenders for Man of the Match today. George
Newell and Rian Eades were particularly effective at the back and
Josh Donson was at the heart of some heated battles in midfield.
However, today the honour went to Kieron Turner for his overall
contribution to the game. He showed passion and commitment and was a
delight to watch. Well done to Kieron and well done to both sides
for their mature attitude throughout this hard fought game. |
Under 14 - Ainsdale 3 Town Green 9
This was always going
to be a difficult match for Ainsdale playing top of the table Town
Green, but it was Ainsdale who started the more brightly of the 2
teams although the first on the score sheet was TG. TG's lead was
short lived as Ainsdale poured on the pressure and scored. A
thunderous run up the wing by the ever reliable Liam Getchell
resulted in an inch perfect cross to allow Robbie Wood to touch the
ball past the TG keeper. Ainsdale kept up the pressure but TG's
keeper was up to the job and made some great saves, denying Ainsdale
on several occasions. Ainsdale then went into the lead with a Gary
Payne goal shocking TG into action. TG's next goal came as a result
of the player superbly beating 4 defenders and the keeper to coolly
place the ball into the back of the net. TG were now playing their
trademark simple passing football and 3 more goals followed before
half time to make the score 2-5 TG.
The second half was
pretty much the same from TG but Ainsdale were flagging. Lee
Tierney's speed and strength for Ainsdale proved too much for the TG
defence on several occasions, but was unlucky not to convert any of
his shots, missing narrowly on several occasions.
TG were on a roll scoring another 4 times. Only a consolation goal
from Paul Simm's gave the Ainsdale supporters something to cheer
about in the 2nd half.
Congratulations to
Town Green who thoroughly deserved the win (and apologies for not
getting the goal scorers names.)
For Ainsdale this was definitely a game of 2 halves. Ainsdale’s MOM
Jamie Segar who worked his socks off in defence.
Under 16 - Crosshouse 4 Formby Dons 3
Current league
positions and form counted for nothing when these two teams met in a
local derby. Formby Dons settled better from the kick off and within
a couple of minutes Sam Laughton found himself clear inside the
penalty box. He was unceremoniously hacked to the ground and the
referee had no option but to point to the spot. There weren’t many
complaints from the Crosshouse defence. The Formby Dons’ player
stepped up to take the kick but slid it wide of the upright. Formby
Dons weren’t discouraged and it wasn’t long before Matt Brown split
the statuesque Crosshouse defence letting in Sam Laughton. Sam took
the ball around Chris Polden but the ball seemed to bobble as he
shot for goal and the ball went wide of the mark.
Crosshouse went ahead when Simon Wozniak guided his header into the
bottom corner after good work by Ben Marsden. 1 – 0. Then as Formby
Dons were trying to clear their heads Crosshouse scored again
through Gary Jones after a dynamic run by Ben Grogan. 2 – 0
Formby Dons aren’t without spirit and halved the deficit on the
stroke of halftime when Sam Laughton skipped around the defender to
tee up Matt Brown who lashed the ball home. 2 – 1.
In the second half a number of changes by Crosshouse manager Jimmy
Kelly seemed to have made the difference as Crosshouse turned the
screw and went further ahead through the educated left foot of
Franny Flathery. 3 – 1. A further Crosshouse goal has added when
mark Grindle steered a header away from goalkeeper Nick Gillen. 4 –
1.
Formby Dons have come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks and they
certainly aren’t without character in the team. Martyn Walsh, Adam
Stanley, Lewis O’Reilly and Cameron Low got a hold of the midfield
and a long punt forward left Sam Laughton clear again on goal. Sam
is an experience forward and steadied himself before unleashing a
howitzer into the top corner. 4 – 2. All of a sudden there was a
glimmer of hope. A corner was conceded and Matt Brown got on the end
of it and smashed the ball home from close range to reduce the
deficit to one goal. 4 – 3.
You could see the fear in the Crosshouse player’s faces and
supporters and it was panic stations at the back. Crosshouse were
reduced to 10 men when one player was sent off and Formby Dons
sensed a famous victory. It was like the Alamo as boys became men in
those final frantic few minutes. All eyes were on the referee as he
checked his watch time and time again. The whistle blew before
Formby Dons could fashion another chance.
After scaring the life out of Crosshouse, next weeks cup match is
going to be a tremendous spectacle. Final Score 4 – 3.
