BBC
Sports Personality of the Year moves to Liverpool for 2008.....!
THE BBC
announced today that the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event
will be held at The Echo Arena Liverpool and will be covered live on
BBC ONE on Sunday 14 December 2008. The state of the art Echo
Arena Liverpool is a 10,600 seat entertainment and sporting venue
and is part of the Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool, the venue
for the launch of the city's Capital of Culture celebrations.
With tickets for the previous two shows selling out within three
hours, the increase in the size of the venue will also allow an
increase in the total size of the audience. Last year 8,000 people
were able to view the show live and the move to Liverpool, for this
year’s event, will allow even greater numbers to experience the
unique atmosphere.
Roger Mosey, Director of Sport, said:- “It feels right to be
taking Sports Personality of the Year to the great sporting city of
Liverpool, and it’s particularly exciting to be part of the Capital
of Culture events. We’ve had a great time in Birmingham in the past
two years and we’d love to go back there in future, but this shows
our commitment to taking the event to venues outside London and to
allowing as many people as possible to see their sporting heroes.”
Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool chief executive Bob Prattey
said:- "This is a major achievement for the city of Liverpool
and for our venue. It is entirely fitting that a city with such an
illustrious sporting history and pedigree should host these awards
during its year as European Capital of Culture."
Echo Arena general manager Tim Banfield added:- "We are
delighted to be hosting this year's awards ceremony, which will
bring invaluable exposure to Liverpool at a time when the city is
going through an unprecedented period of renaissance. The Echo
Arena is at the heart of this renaissance and is arguably the finest
venue of its kind in the UK, if not Europe."
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year event, supported by
Robinsons, recorded viewing figures of 8.6m people watching Joe
Calzaghe win the 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
Programme, ticket and voting details will be announced nearer the
time.
Traffic Officers help woman in labour!
TWO Traffic
Officers from the Highways Agency's North West Traffic Officer
Service at Newton-le-Willows have been praised after getting a woman
in labour to hospital. Traffic Officer Trevor Long and Team
Manager Jane Howard, who are both based at the Rob Lane outstation
at Newton-le-Willows, were on a routine patrol at 7:45am on the M6
around Warrington on Thursday, 21 February 2008, when they were
passed by a car using the hard shoulder to dodge heavy traffic.
Trevor and Jane then discovered the reason for the driver's
behaviour, her sister in the passenger seat had gone into labour.
After notifying colleagues in the Regional Control Centre, also at
Rob Lane, the two Traffic Officers escorted the women's car
southwards down the hard shoulder and off at Junction 22.
Jamie Carr, Network Operations Manager in charge of the North West
Traffic Officer Service, said:- "We are very proud of the
quick way these two Traffic Officers reacted. They were very calm
with the driver and the pregnant lady and once they established
there was genuine urgency with the situation, they were keen to do
all they could to help the woman get to hospital. We only ever
go off the motorway network in exceptional circumstances and of
course this was one of those." Jane, who is from
Helsby near Frodsham said:- "Obviously everyone in the
Highways Agency hopes that everything went well after we guided the
lady to Warrington Hospital. We get all kinds of incidents on the
motorway, but this was a first for us." And
Trevor, from Warrington added:- "Our job is to keep drivers on
the move and it was a particular pleasure in this case as otherwise
we might have been helping to deliver a baby!" |
Cirque Du Soliel comes to Liverpool!
A CRITICALLY
acclaimed entertainment group CIRQUE DU SOLEIL have teamed up with
the world's leading live entertainment company LIVE NATION, to stage
"DELIRIUM", a groundbreaking arena production using
holograms, virtual reality, multi-media sound and imaging to create
a magical world with a surreal, multi-sensory mix of theatre, dance,
international music, stunning acrobatics and video projections.
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL will bring this awe
inspiring arena production to Liverpool with two exclusive dates at
the Echo Arena in Liverpool on the 25 March 2008 and 26 March 2008
and tickets for the shows go are now on sale!
DELIRIUM ventures into the territory usually occupied by rock
superstars, playing in large scale arenas for only a few nights per
city, it has already received rave reviews across the US & Europe
and has sold-out across 55 cities world-wide. In the UK the Sun
calls it "one of the most amazing visual spectacles around."
Candis Magazine says "Theatre, song and dance meet multi-media
and technology to blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality
and whisk you away to another world" and the Manchester
Evening News states "You Can't Top This". In the US
the praise is equally high, The New York Times quotes
"DELIRIUM is a full-scale spectacle, with nearly four dozen
performers in Cirque's usual array of acrobatic feats and technical
razzle-dazzle, eerie tableaus and phantasmagoric costumes."
With over 1.5 million "Delirious"
fans world-wide, the show has already achieved a Top 10 Box
Office award for the highest grossing US concert in 2007. The
world-wide tour has spanned more than 55 cities selling out across
the world in countries including Germany, Italy, Finland, Belgium,
Sweden, Hungary, the UK, and the US. The show has also been honoured
with the highly prestigious Billboard Creative Content Award.
The show will finally hit Liverpool with two exclusive performances.
Contrary to the traditional Cirque shows that play over multiple
weeks in Big Tops, DELIRIUM is a one-off mind-blowing
multimedia/theatrical production with two to three arena dates in
each key city.
Phil Bowdery, Vice President Of Touring at Live Nation commented:-
"Delirium is unlike any show you have ever seen in
your life. It's awe inspiring, innovative, and breathtaking. This
unique form of visual, musical, and artistic entertainment pushes
the boundaries of what people expect to see in an arena. The show
has an enormous wow factor and spectacular style."
DELIRIUM delivers a multi sensory experience using holograms,
virtual reality, multi-media sound, theatre, dance, international
music and video projectory imaging to create a magical world. The
show guarantees to be a spectacle on an epic scale, featuring a cast
of thirty six talented and multidisciplinary artists comprising
eight musicians, six singers, eleven dancers, eight acrobats and
three main characters.
This unique, large-scale event is also set to be the largest, most
technical production ever created and staged for an arena. The show
features a 130 foot stage honeycombed with traps and flying rigs so
that actors can materialise from the depths, or float across an
illuminated sky. There are 540 feet of projection surfaces, the
equivalent of four IMAX screens, setting the stage for a colossal
multimedia presentation and experience. Projected images range from
pre-recorded visuals to manipulated live feeds that create
interactions between the show and the audience.
Music also takes a more central role than ever before; twenty of the
most memorable melodies from various Cirque shows over the years
have been rearranged for DELIRIUM into a sonic symphony.
Cirque du Soleil handpicked Liverpool for the tour due its thriving
cultural scene. Delirium has already been enormously successful in
the North West with two sell out dates at Manchester's MEN Arena in
2007. The massive performance will provide Liverpool with its first
ever taste of Cirque du Soleil.
The DELIRIUM UK Tour will be presented in very limited engagements
in large arenas with two nights in the Liverpool Echo Arena as
follows:- 25 March 2008 and 26 March 2008. |
