Merseytravel supports 2 key rail stations
MERSEYTRAVEL
has agreed to support the re-development of 2 key regional railway
stations, including the £10million new-look Chester Station.
Merseytravel is supporting the regeneration of Chester Station and
Ormskirk Station with grants totalling more than £400,000 over the
next 2 years. The stations are both key links to the
Merseyrail network. Chester is the 10th most popular origin
destination (of Merseyside’s 90 plus stations) for Merseyrail
passengers – Ormskirk is 13th.
The Chester Station funding (£215,000) will support repairs and
improved passenger facilities on Merseyrail’s origin and destination
platform, platform 7, which could see more regular services in
future.
The money Merseytravel is giving to Ormskirk Station (£200,000) will
support improvements to the station building, roof, flooring,
booking hall, toilets and passenger facilities as part of a wider
£1.1million regeneration.
The announcement of
funding for Ormskirk Station comes as Merseytravel launches a new
study looking at demand for the potential reinstatement and possible
electrification of the Burscough Curves. The Burscough Curves
project would involve electrifying the link between two stations in
Burscough, currently on completely separate railway lines –
Burscough Bridge (Southport to Manchester line) and Burscough
Junction (Ormskirk to Preston line). It would allow for a
direct link between Ormskirk and Southport, boosting services for
rail passengers in the area.
Neil Scales, Chief Executive and Director General of Merseytravel,
said:- “The redevelopment of Orsmkirk Station is important
because it links closely with what we are looking to do with the
Burscough Curves, which has a lot of support locally. It’s
important we plan for the future, and that’s exactly what we are
doing. Ormskirk is a key station on the network and for a
relatively small amount of funding we can make some really important
improvements. The more passengers we can encourage onto trains,
rather than roads, to more benefits we will see in terms of reducing
congestion. That’s the thinking behind both of these important
investments.”
Chester Station is a Grade 2* listed station and is undergoing a
series of improvements as part of the Chester Station ‘Gateway’
project. Works taking place as part of the Gateway project
include refurbishing the station building, new stonework and
lighting and platform roofs, rebuilding platform seven (the
Merseyrail platform) and the creation of a new ticket sales
buildings and 3 ‘pavilions’.
Ormskirk Station is a Grade 2 listed station and is the interchange
between electric services from Liverpool and diesel services from
Preston.

Letter to editor:- "David James, England goalkeeper"
"LAST week marked the beginning of the Keep Your Eye On The Ball 'focus
fortnight' from 23 February to 8 March 2008, which aims to get football fans
thinking about testicular cancer and the importance of checking for
any unusual lumps or bumps.
The fortnight is run by Everyman, the UK's leading male cancer
campaign, with the support of The FA and The PFA. Its theme this
year is 'catch it early', a message not only of vital
importance to goalies but to all men. If blokes check themselves
regularly and catch testicular cancer early, there is a 99% chance
of survival.
So, lads, don't be scared, do something. Watch out for our adverts
in football stadiums across the country and don't forget to Keep
Your Eye On The Ball.
