Merseyside joins the search for the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded stars

DO you have a favourite Lottery-funded project?

Has a Lottery-funded project made an impact on your community?

Or are you personally involved in a project that is transforming lives?   If so, your favourite project could have the chance to win £2,000 and be the star of a prime-time BBC 1 TV show, thanks to The National Lottery Awards.

Now entering their 5th successful year, the Awards aim to recognise the difference that Lottery-funded projects of all sizes make to local communities and celebrate the achievements of the people behind them, and we want your nominations.

In the last year alone, over £16 million of Lottery funding has gone to projects in Merseyside. And now, The National Lottery is encouraging these projects, and the thousands like them across the UK, to enter the Awards and gain recognition for their fantastic work. So, if you want a project from Merseyside to be a winner, visit www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards to find out more. Nominations can be made by calling 0845 130 4133.

Entries must be received by 5pm 20 March 2008.

Lending her support to the Awards this year, Andrea McLean, GMTV and Loose Women presenter, says:- “28p of every Lottery pound goes towards Good Causes, which means Lottery players are making a huge difference to the lives of individuals and communities across the UK.  I was amazed by the stories of some truly remarkable people who are using Lottery funding for projects of all sizes to make the UK a better place to live. The Awards recognise the talent, hard work and amazing dedication of the people involved in running Lottery-funded projects. Now it’s your chance to make sure your favourite gets the recognition it deserves.”

There are 7 categories in the Awards, each reflecting an area of Lottery funding:-

Sport; Heritage; Arts; Environment; Health and Education and the Woman magazine Charity/Voluntary category.

Any shortlisted projects from Merseyside will have to compete against projects from all over the UK, with seven category winners being announced later in the year on a special BBC 1 programme. Each winner will also receive £2,000 to spend on their project.

METROPOLIS:- CAPTURING MODERN LIVERPOOL

LIVERPOOL'S fascinating emergence as a modern city is on display in "Metropolis: Capturing Modern Liverpool" at the National Conservation Centre from 21 March to 10 August 2008.

Featuring over 60 images from the archives of Stewart Bale Ltd, a photographic practice based in Liverpool, the display spans a period of great change for the city. Taken between the 1930s and 1970s the evocative photographs give a remarkable insight into landmark buildings, cutting edge developments, great events and city life.  Monumental in scale and beautifully composed, the photographs reflect a Victorian city embracing modernity and industrialisation and are of particular resonance as Liverpool enters its Capital of Culture year, 2008, during a time of massive regeneration.

Curator of photographic archives Anne Gleave said:- "Stewart Bale Ltd created a legacy of major importance, combining outstanding craftsmanship with a unique record of Liverpool’s changing face during a significant period of social and industrial change and development.

The photographs can be read as a visual record of their client’s aspirations and achievements towards modernisation and advancement within the city, whether it be the latest interior of a self service shop or a major engineering feat such as the Queensway Mersey tunnel.

The images are visually strong and look back to positive aspects of Liverpool’s more recent history."

Highlights include:-

* Images of stunning architectural projects such as the Georges Dock building, Liverpool’s cathedrals and Martins Bank.

* Rare views of groundbreaking engineering projects such as the Queensway Mersey tunnel and Overhead Railway.

* Detailed scenes of great city events such as the launch of Mauretania II.

* A collection of fascinating scenes showing people at work. Photographs of Meccano Ltd and Ford’s factory show Liverpool as a powerful industrial hub.

* Beautiful shots of Liverpool attractions such as the Abbey Cinema and New Brighton Baths.
