SURVEY REVEALS RED MEAT MYTHS
NEW research
from Quality Meat Scotland reveals people in the North West are
confused over the fat content of red meat. 75% of people in the
region mistakenly believe a portion of chicken curry has less fat
than a steak.
Other findings included:-
* 34% don’t know that zinc rich red meat can maintain male fertility
* 19% believe fish
and chips has less fat than a steak
* 13% of people think
pepperoni pizza has less fat than a steak
Red meat is essential for a healthy active lifestyle. Scotch Beef,
Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork are rich in protein, zinc
and haem iron, the best kind for the body as it’s easily absorbed.
The research was conducted as part of the Feel Good About Meat
campaign, fronted by Strictly Come Dancing star and former
international rugby player, Kenny Logan.
A farmer’s son, Kenny knows red meat is rich in protein, vitamins
and minerals. Kenny said:- “Having grown up in a farm in
Stirling, I have always been a huge fan of red meat, not just
because it tastes delicious but it boosted my energy levels during
my rugby career.”
Dr Carrie Ruxton, an independent nutritionist said:- “Most
people don’t realise the fat content of lean red meat has fallen by
around 40% in the last 30 years thanks to improvements in farming
methods. People who avoid red meat may be missing out on
essential nutrients such as vitamin B12, which supports our blood
cells, or zinc, which is essential for sperm production. Not only
that; as part of a healthy balanced diet, red meat is fantastic for
boosting energy levels.”

NORTH WEST AIR AMBULANCE ASKS THE REGION TO HIT THE ROAD AND RAISE
FUNDS
THE North West
Air Ambulance is appealing to runners from around the North West
region to don their trainers and raise much needed funds for the
charity which is 100% reliant on donations from the public to keep
it airborne.
The charity which provides a life saving service to all the
residents and visitors to the region has a select number of places
in marathons across the globe and a London based 10k which they need
the people of the North West to hot foot and apply for.
They have 6 places for the Berlin Marathon which takes place on 28th
September 2008.
The marathon has over 40,000 runners and takes in
the amazing architecture of the city including the finish at the
Brandenburg Gate.
There are also 3 places available in the iconic
New York Marathon which takes in 5 bridges within 5 of the boroughs
on the race day of 2 November 2008.
The 2nd of trans-Atlantic marathons they have race spaces in is the
Chicago Marathon which takes place on 12 November 2008.
The 6 people
who scoop these places will get to take in 15 neighbourhoods on
their 26 mile journey round the city.
Closer to home they have ten
spaces in the inaugural BUPA ‘The Ten Thousand’ happening on
26 May 2008.
Lynda Brislin, chief executive of the charity added:- “It
costs us £1.9million to keep the air ambulance staffed and in the
air.
We attend a variety of incidents from car accidents to heart
attacks and the speed of the service means that we increase survival
chances.
We would love runners or wannabe runners from the region to
get in touch about running for us.”
Runners need to raise a minimum of £1,500 each and fund their own
accommodation and travel costs.

REGION’S FOOD AND DRINK COMPANIES INVITED TO ‘CELEBRATE A CULTURE
OF SUCCESS’
FOOD and drink companies from
across Merseyside are being invited to enter the 3rd annual Food
Northwest Awards 2008, which this year will see winners announced at
a special Gala Awards dinner hosted in June, at the new Liverpool
Arena and Convention Centre. Organised by Food Northwest, the
organisation set up to lead the food and drink industry and to help
to grow the Northwest regional economy, the awards recognise the
innovations, best practice initiatives and achievements of
businesses across Merseyside, Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester
and Lancashire. They acknowledge companies from all areas of the
industry, including food retail and service, wholesale,
distribution, food processing and agriculture.
The Northwest has one of the largest food and drink sectors in the
UK, contributing £9.5 billion to the local economy, employing over
450,000 people and providing more than 12% of the region’s income.
The sector has been identified by the Northwest Regional Development
Agency, (NWDA) as a priority growth sector within the Regional
Economic Strategy. In Liverpool and Merseyside alone, the
sector is valued at £2.7 billion and directly employs more than
10,000 people. Between 2002 and 2004, its growth was higher than any
other industry type, and continued growth is predicted over the next
5 years.
This year’s awards will focus on the theme ‘Celebrating a Culture
of Success’, reflecting Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture
status for 2008, and will highlight the innovation and dedication of
companies excelling in their sector, right across the Northwest.
The winners will be announced at the Gala Awards dinner, hosted by
Lucy Meacock of Granada TV, on Thursday 19 June 2008. The awards’
dinner menu will reflect the region’s diverse produce.
Entry to the awards is free and businesses have the chance to submit
applications in 11 categories, recognising achievement in the
following 3 areas: Enterprise and Innovation, Environments for
Sustainability and Dynamic Northwest. This year there is a
new, special award to recognise outstanding achievement by an
individual in the industry - the IGD Learning Award for the
Northwest Food Industry Rising Star. The winner of this award will
receive entry to the IGD Postgraduate Certificate in Food and
Grocery Industry Management course, which is worth £3,500 and is
validated by the University of Edinburgh and tutored by industry
experts. The closing date for award entries is Monday May 2, 2008.
Pat Foreman, chief executive of Food Northwest, said:- “These
are the third annual Food Northwest Awards and as with previous
years, we anticipate high quality applications from the diverse
range of companies from across the region. It is their innovation,
energy and enthusiasm which drives this dynamic industry.”
Winners of the Food Northwest Awards 2007 include a Merseyside
charity that pioneered the use of local food and drink products
within the National Health Service (NHS), and whose work was shared
with 13 European countries, a Cheshire dairy, which has risen from a
small family company to a market leader in goats’ milk products and
one of the UK’s best known manufacturers of authentic Indian food. A
Cumbrian company which has been making gingerbread to the same
recipe, in the same cottage, for more than 150 years and a
Lancashire snacks company that developed a range of healthy,
gluten-free snacks, also scooped top awards last year.
Pat Broster, supply chain initiatives manger from Groundwork
Merseyside, which won The Mersey Partnership Award for Supply Chain
Solutions in 2007, says:- “Local sourcing can have a positive
economic, social, environmental and health benefit not only for
local businesses, but for the people that live and work in our
communities. We were delighted to win this award, which has helped
to raise the profile of our work across the region and hopefully
encouraged other public sector organisations to take a similar
approach.”
The awards are sponsored by; Business Link, Northwest; UK Trade &
Investment, DWF solicitors; the Learning & Skills Council; Food
Northwest and IGD, the UK’s think tank and research organisation for
the grocery sector. Sponsorship opportunities are still available
for a number of awards.
Organisations can nominate themselves, or be nominated by another
party. Application forms can be completed online at
www.foodnw.co.uk/awards. Further details of the award
categories can also be found at this address, along with information
on how to obtain tickets for the Gala Awards Dinner. Those
