Royle kicks off £1 million sports field
FORMER Everton
FC boss, Joe Royle is to kick off celebrations to mark the opening of
a new £1 million sports facility in Norris Green. The launch
of the new Scargreen Sports Ground on Tuesday, 18 March 2008 is the
culmination of Proud Norris Green week, and also includes a
community fun and information day at Lifestyles Ellergreen and the
children’s and community centre.
The new sports ground includes 5 brand new grass pitches, a floodlit
all-weather pitch along with a changing pavilion which will be used
by 1,500 local youngsters for sports including football and rugby.
Joe Royle, who was brought up in Norris Green, will be joined by
pupils from his former school, Ranworth Square Primary, along with
council leader Warren Bradley and Deputy Lord Mayor Steve Rotheram.
The youngsters will take part in training sessions with former Blues
star Ronnie Goodlass and rugby league sessions with St Helens and
Great Britain rugby player James Graham. Funding for the
project has come from Sport England, the Football Foundation, Alt
Valley Partnership and the city council and is the result of a long
campaign by the local community headed by Scargreen Park Recreation
in Norris Green (SPRING).
Council leader Warren Bradley said:- “This is a brilliant new
facility for the youngsters of Norris Green and brings to £15
million the amount invested in playing fields in Liverpool since
1999. In recent years, Scargreen sports ground had become
totally unused, despite the efforts of the local community to use it
for a junior football league and other sports activities and now it
has been totally transformed. The renovated site will make a
real difference to local people and help Liverpool continue its
tradition of sporting excellence.”
Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said:-
"The Scargreen project is a wonderful example of the
difference that the Football Foundation funding is making to
communities right across the country. Since its launch in July
2000 the Football Foundation has funded 73 projects in the Liverpool
FA area worth over £16m. This latest scheme is set to
reinvigorate sport in and around Norris Green and I want to
congratulate Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool FA and all local
stakeholders involved in making these outstanding new facilities a
reality."
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director of Sport England North West
said:- ‘Sport England is committed to developing clubs,
coaches and projects across Merseyside so we are delighted to be
supporting this fantastic facility, which will be a real focal point
for sport in Norris Green."
The activities taking place at Ellergreen Lifestyles include scuba
diving sessions; a climbing wall; displays from Merseyside Fire and
Rescue Service and Merseyside Police dogs and horses; basketball
with Everton Tigers and advice on giving up smoking and healthy
eating. Proud Norris Green has seen the whole area benefit
from a comprehensive programme of litter picking, grot spot
improvement and removal of graffiti together with a drive to help
local people into employment and training though home visits, job
clubs and youth work.
Councillor Colin Eldridge, executive member for leisure and
community safety, said:- “There is lots of good work going on
to improve life for people in Norris Green, much of it driven by
local residents. These 2 events are a great way of rounding
off a hugely successful week.” |

ANOTHER LETTER TO THE EDITOR:-
"The Clitheroe Kid
Radio Show"
"ARE your
readers able to help a group of OTR (Old Time Radio) enthusiasts who
are searching for missing episodes of this hugely popular comedy of
yesteryear?
The BBC only
retains a small portion of the 290 shows broadcast between 1957 and
1972.
A similar appeal last year found four missing episodes.
If you have shows taped from the radio broadcasts onto cassette or
reel to reel tape, please let us know. These could be the sole
surviving copy of such shows.
Only one show from the 1970’s now eludes us.
The episode is
ironically entitled “The Not-So-Artful Dodger”.
Please contact me if you are able to help, if so please send us an
email." Derek Boyes.
