Helping children blossom...
PARENTS of
children with special educational needs and disabilities are getting
a helping hand. A special event, organised by the city’s
Parent Partnership team, is giving parents all the support they need
to get their child’s life at secondary school off to a flying start.
Attended by a range of different service providers, the event is
offering parents of Year 5 children (9 to 10 year olds) a wealth of
information. They will be able to get practical advice about
planning their child’s transfer from primary to secondary school,
and find out what support is available. Experts will be on
hand to answer questions about support available for a range of
special educational needs and disabilities at secondary age -
including autism, sensory impairment and attention deficit and hyperactivty disorder.
Parents will also be able to have 1-to-1 meetings with staff from
nearly all of the city’s secondary schools and get advice from the
council about school transport, speech and language support and
applying for school places.
The council’s executive member for children’s services, Councillor
Keith Turner, said:- “This is an invaluable event for all
parents of children with special needs and disabilities who are
starting secondary school in September 2009. The transition
from primary to secondary school can be very difficult for children
who face specific barriers to learning and we are committed to
removing those barriers. The Parent Partnership team is helping us
do this by working closely with parents and pupils, taking on board
their views and giving them the information they need. Last
year’s event was described by parents as totally invaluable. I would
urge all parents who need advice or have any unanswered questions to
come along to this year’s event and make the most of this unique
opportunity to get a wealth of expert information about your child’s
future.”
The Parent Partnership information event takes place on Wednesday 25
June 2008, from 9.30am - 2.30pm at the Devonshire House Hotel, Edge
Lane, Liverpool, L7 0JD

THEATRE
in the Park returns for its 5th season in 2008 with an all-new
outdoor production of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, Alice in
Wonderland. Performances take place in Liverpool (Allerton
Tower, 14 June 2008 & 15 June 2008); Knowsley (Stadt Moers Park, 21
June & 22 June 2008); and
for the first time, Halton (Wigg Island, 28 June 2008 & 29 June
2008).
Produced and directed by Spike Theatre, the 40 strong cast for Alice
in Wonderland is made up of both professional and first-time actors,
who wind their way around the park as the performance unfolds. The
project engages with volunteers from the Friends of the Parks,
students and amateur actors to develop skills in performance and
script/music development, as well as stage management and design.
The script and music score are both original pieces developed by the
whole company.
Councillor Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool city council and
deputy chair of the Liverpool Culture Company said:- “Over the
past few years Theatre in the Park has established itself as one of
highlights of Merseyside’s summer events calendar. It’s a
great opportunity for people to enjoy some really entertaining
theatre in picturesque surroundings, and we’re expecting the 2008
performances to be as popular as previous years.”
As the show is a ‘walkabout’ performance, the audience are
encouraged to bring along a rug and picnic. Given the unpredictable
nature of the British summer, suitable footwear, umbrellas and/or
sun cream are also recommended.
All performances take
place at 2pm & 7pm on Saturday, and 2pm & 6pm on Sunday.
For tickets and more information contact the 08 Place Box Office,
Whitechapel (in person) or telephone:- 0151 233 2457, Monday to
