BUSINESSES have been struggling
ever since Wesley Street, in Southport, was closed to traffic, so
traders gathered together to make themselves noticed a bit more...
On Saturday, 14 June 2008, the street held a festival and promised
the best of Independent Shopping in Southport. Starting at 10am, the
event lasted well into the evening with live bands, outside Wesley
Music Shop, Street Art, thanks to the Christian Book Shop, Graham
Eyes put on a fantastic BBQ, Chester’s made lunch time a bit more
snappy serving up alligator! Headquarters Hair Design did face
painting, The Cherry Tree Toy Shop entertained the kids with games
on the street. The Volunteer did a wine tasting and a Tombola.
Kelly's put out flags and other items. Freshfield Animal Rescue also
joined in the fun offering nibbles to customers. Vitalise
entertained people outside, Second Glance Event Decorators put up a
fantastic balloon display. One of the main organisers, from Saratoga
Antiques, told us that:- "This day bought a lot of people down
here, but it was always busy here until Waitrose closed and this
half finished pedestrianisation took place. As we can no longer have
cars down our street, businesses are suffering. If Sefton can clean
up and finish what they started, we might be able to make more
events like this happen. Also, we would not suffer from people
ignoring the businesses in this road, if they didn’t get put off by
the state it is now in. We have a friendly and unusual street, and
all of us are independent shops, with the odd charity shop, so we
can offer a warm friendly and traditional approach to shopping.
Often you find things here you cannot find in any of the major shops
in town, or even in Liverpool! We would like Sefton to give all the
businesses a chance by finishing the job of pedestrianisation of the
road and tiding it up. The design we were all shown is fantastic,
but each time we ask when will it be done, we never get an
answer. This half-pedestrianising cum semi-road closure is killing
our businesses. Please now completely pedestrianise it. Do not leave us hanging!" As normal, we
will let the pictures tell the rest. A photo tells you a thousand
times more than words can.
