FACE08
SEFTON Park
was not only the base for Africa Oye, on Saturday 21 June 2008, but
was also one of the venues, alongside Liverpool University’s
Carnatic and Greenbank Parks, for FACE08 (First Aid Convention in
Europe), an international convention held by the European Red Cross
and Red Crescent (Turkey). On Saturday, 28 teams from all over
Europe were competing to provide First Aid at a range of scenarios
set out at 14 points across the parks. These representations
provided a challenging variety of accident and emergency situations
which first aiders may meet in reality. British Red Cross members
from across the country were drafted in to help marshal,
administrate and judge the competition. Also, their dedicated
volunteers, with very realistic props, make up and camouflage
completing the scene, enacted casualty simulations. As host nation
,Britain fielded no team but will be allowed two next year, as
Ireland, last year’s host, was on Saturday. This convention ran from
19 June to 22 June 2008 and consisted of lectures, workshops, exhibitions and
demonstrations, including Water Rescue at Duke’s Dock, on the
waterfront. Venues for the events, besides the parks, included
Liverpool University and the new Convention Centre, also on the
waterfront. Accommodation was provided at Liverpool University’s
halls of residence. "Time off" included a trip on a
Mersey ferry and a brief glimpse of some of Liverpool’s many
attractions. Find out in next weeks issue who won!
