Veterans' Day, 29 June 2008 in Southport
SADLY the day
started out fine, but cold, and as the morning progressed it started
to rain. That did not stop the show nor did it dampen the
enthusiasm of exhibitors and side-shows including the groups who
performed in the grass arena. The Mounted Police were their usual
impeccable performers on their magnificent horses. The Imps
Motorbike Display, on wet grass with hard soil beneath, took
everyone's breath away. The Imps ages varied between 16 and 6
years of age! Brigadier Griffiths arrived as the fine rain started
to fall and shortly after the Mayor arrived. They both did a
short walk-a-bout before entering the small marquee. The rain
was now falling rather more heavily, so the presentation of veteran
badges was moved from the dais outside to the marquee. The
Mayor and the Brigadier presented Veteran Badges to the following
veterans: Graham Ormesher Royal Navy, Ted Forden Royal Air Force,
Tommy Foster Royal Navy, Eastuart Stead Royal Electrical and
Mechanical Engineers, Lisa Smith Royal Signals, Syl Taylor Royal
Signals, and finally, but not least, Gregory Fenwick who had been
delayed because he had been running for a charity.
The afternoon brightened up and the poor crowd attendance, caused by
rain in during the morning seemed to improve. Before a final
downpour there were great displays by the Lancastrian Brigade Band
and Corps of Drums as did the Wigan Scout Band. A very
impressive demonstration was given by the British Transport Police
Dog Team. The Southport Sea Cadets Band performed in an
intriguing way, well done. NGVFA, National Gulf Veterans and
Families Association, who are fighting for recognition, were one of
the many stands as well helping with the preparations for the show.
The Salvation Army was a much appreciated presence and performance.
The Chairman of the Veterans Fund, Mr Stephen Hawkshow, the
organisers, told me that the fund is dependent upon voluntary
subscriptions and gifts. He went on to say that the fund was
starting to explore the possibility of a building to house all the
different local military associations as they have to hire rooms for
meetings and get-togethers. The Veterans fund seems to be a
very worthwhile addition for the benefit of our veterans.
Congratulations to all those who took part and to those who braved
the inclement weather, for it was a great show, well done everyone.
I personally look forward to the next one in 2009.
Later this week we
will be adding a video with highlights of the IMPS performing their
stunts. So keep an eye on this report!
