Enterprise to expand in Liverpool
ENTERPRISE has
unveiled plans for new office and training space on the Estuary
Business Park adjacent to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in Speke.
The 11.5 acre, 200,000 square feet site, which will be constructed
over two phases, will provide a wide-range of skills training for
people, including those who want to work in the public sector and
utilities industries.
Council leader Warren Bradley said:- “This is a major boost
for the local area which will create a large number of high quality
new jobs for people of Liverpool. I am delighted that
Enterprise is setting up this brilliant facility which will give
opportunities to so many people. This investment is a further
sign of the growing business confidence which is evident all over
Liverpool. We already have an excellent working relationship
with Enterprise through our pioneering joint venture and this scheme
shows their absolute commitment to making a real difference to the
city.”
The company will also forge close links with the Business Academy
proposed for Garston as part of the council’s Building Schools for
the Future programme. The new school is set to replace New
Heys Comprehensive and St Benedicts Roman Catholic High by 2013 and
discussions are already underway about how the company will be
involved.
Councillor Keith Turner, executive member for education, skills and
employment, said:- “The skills training that this new centre
of excellence will provide is absolutely crucial if local people are
to take advantage of Liverpool’s growing economy.
I am
particularly thrilled that they are planning to forge a strong
alliance with the new business academy as it will make sure that
pupils are equipped with the necessary practical skills to compete
for decent jobs.”
Enterprise already runs a business support centre at the nearby
Matchworks site in Speke and employs around 300 people on its
contracts with the city council, Defence Estates, Whitbread PLC and
back office support functions.
Owen McLaughlin, Chairman of Enterprise, said:- “We have a
superb relationship with Liverpool through our joint venture
partnership. It has gone from strength to strength over the last 6
years and provided much improved services.
We are looking
forward to developing the new office and training facilities in
Liverpool, which we believe is one of the most foremost cities in
the country."
A planning application for the scheme is due to be submitted in the
next few months |

MERSEYSIDE YOUTH GAMES
THIS
year’s Merseyside Youth Games takes place at Wavertree Sports Park
on Saturday 5 July 2008. The event is the culmination of local
events in each of the 6 boroughs of Merseyside - Halton, Knowsley,
Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, Wirral and has involved over 3,000
young people.
In order to recruit competitors for the Merseyside Youth Games,
Local Authority Sports Development Units liaise with National
Governing Bodies of sport and schools to organise local tournaments.
These local tournaments establish the best competitors for each
sport, and in addition to school-based competitions establish the
best team to represent its’ local authority at the Youth Games.
The event is for Primary age young
people and will see 1,200 young people compete in the following
sporting competitions: Athletics, Boccia, Football, Gymnastics,
Netball, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball, Rugby Union and Swimming on
one site. The Sporting Champion attending this event will be Rachel
Brown.
A composed presence as the last
line of England's defence, Rachel Brown has grown in stature and
experience in recent years. In April 2007 she was selected to be
part of the FIFA All-star team that played an exhibition against
World Cup hosts China, where she was able to train with Norwegian
legend Bente Norby.
In China Rachel was once more an
imposing presence as England sought to show the world what they
could do, and her dramatic save from Kerstin Garefrekes just minutes
from the end of England's clash with Germany proved a pivotal moment
for Hope Powell's team in getting out of Group A and into the
quarters.
In her early career Rachel earned
a football scholarship in the United States where she played for the
University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Panthers). Rachel was named
Goalkeeper of the Year for the Eastern Conference every year and
also holds the University record for the least goals conceded in a
season.
Another of Rachel’s earlier career
highlights saw her take part in the 1996 FA Women’s Cup Final at 15
years old with Liverpool.
Merseyside Youth Games is mainly
financed by sponsorship, this is the fifth year Capita – the UK’s
largest support services company – has sponsored the youth games.
The six Local Authorities of Merseyside contribute funding and
individual sponsors can fund each of the sports in the Games. For
