STANLEY HIGH SCHOOL PIPPED AT THE POST FOR GRAND FINAL PLACE
A team of 8
teenagers from Stanley High School in Southport has narrowly missed
out on a place in the 2008 Fieldfare Kielder Challenge Finals.
The Fieldfare Kielder Challenge is a unique outdoor adventure
competition for youngsters with and without physical, learning and
sensory disabilities. The event is in its 24th year and is organised
by the UK’s leading outdoor access charity, Fieldfare Trust, and is
supported by HSBC in the Community.
The Stanley High School team scored highly in the North East and
North West region after it took part in the regional heat at Haigh
Hall but fell short of achieving one of 12 Grand Final places.
“It was a very close call this year,” explained
Fieldfare Trust project officer, Andy Johnson. “The judges had
a tough job as the standard of entries has been outstanding, but
unfortunately it wasn’t enough for this team to get through.”
More than 300 teams entered the Fieldfare Kielder Challenge this
year but only 12 teams will be competing at the Finals in Kielder
Forest in Northumberland this September.
The Grand Final is split into 2, 2-day finals between 24 to 28
September. The Cup Final sees the top 6 regional winners compete on
Saturday, 27 September 2008 and Sunday, 28 September 2008 while the 2nd place regional winners
compete in the Plate Final on Wednesday 24, September 2008 and Thursday, 25
September 2008.

POOP SCOOP WEEK 2008
AS the debate rages on about
whether CCTV should be used to catch those who do not pick up after
their dogs, the successes of this year’s Poop Scoop Week are proving
there is nothing better than education and good old-fashioned
community spirit when it comes to clearing the UK’s parks, beaches
and pavements for summer.
Poop Scoop Week, headed by Dogs Trust, is now in its 9th year. Local
Authorities up and down the nation have united with the UK’s largest
dog welfare charity to raise awareness, educate the ill-informed and
bring communities together to fight the problem of dog fouling in a
positive, socially cohesive way.
Clarissa Baldwin, Dogs Trust Chief Executive comments:- “Dog
fouling is an emotive issue, and is still one of the most complained
about problems according to Local Authorities. It does substantial
damage to the reputation of dogs and responsible dog owners.
However, as is so often the case, carrot works better than stick
when tackling this problem. Acting through fear of punishment –
exemplified through the use of CCTV – is no substitute for a true
motivation to act responsibly. Year-on-year Poop Scoop Week is
a consistent success as communities unite to clear up local public
spaces for everyone to enjoy. Those concerned about dog
fouling in their local area should contact their Local Authority to
find out how they can join the campaign for a cleaner
neighbourhood.” |
