West End Star joins the cast of Benny!
AUGHTON'S
Chris Barton will feature amongst an all star line up when the smash
hit musical 'Our Benny' returns to the Liverpool Empire this
coming November. Chris, who shot to fame as a finalist in the
BBC’s 'Any Dream Will Do', has just signed with ABD
Productions, the team behind the most hotly anticipated theatre
event of 2008.
Revamped and re-orchestrated, but true to Silas K.Hocking’s original
novel 'Her Benny-Our Benny' is an emotive tale of a young boys
struggle to survive the harsh streets of Liverpool during the
cruelty and injustice of the Victorian era. The story centres
on the life and times of 'Benny Bates' and his waif like sister
'Nell'. With a drunkard for a father and a brutish stepmother,
the young pair are forced to earn a crust by selling matches and
carrying bags for the rich of the 1880’s on the Liverpool docks.
Fleeing the violence of their broken home, the pair are taken in by
kindly night watchman 'Joe Wragg' and his wife
'Sally',
and for a while live like a proper family. Although happy for a
time, tragedy strikes when 'Little Nell' falls ill and
'Benny'
is accused of a crime he didn’t commit.
20 Year old Chris, a former Pupil at St Michael’s C of E School will
share the world famous Empire stage with stars Bernie Nolan (Sally
Wragg) and Sam Kane (Joe Wragg).
Sam Kane shot to fame as the loveable Hairdresser Peter Phelan in
'Brookside'. Subsequent appearances in 'Coronation Street'
and 'Emmerdale' firmly secured his status as a household name.
After leading roles in 'Carousel, Seven Brides For Seven
Brothers and Boogie Nights' Sam’s delighted to be coming
home to Liverpool to play 'Joe Wragg' in 'Our Benny'.
Bernie Nolan is
instantly recognisable as the lead singer from the incredibly
popular 'Nolans Sisters'. With record sales exceeding 9
million, they provided the blueprint for successive groups. Much
loved for her characters in 'Brookside' and 'The Bill',
Bernie also received critical acclaim for her portrayal as Mrs.
Johnstone in 'Blood Brothers'. Bernie plays leading lady
'Sally Wragg in Our Benny'.
Emma Dears- from the
stage of the Liverpool Empire, to London’s West End, through Europe
and back to Liverpool, Emma’s a local girl who’s incredibly proud of
her Merseyside roots. Emma played lead roles in 'Les Miserables,
Miss Saigon' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and on TV in
'Shameless and Hollyoaks'. This is Emma’s 2nd appearance in
'Our Benny', this time she plays the part of 'Older Eva'.
Johnny Kennedy is one
of the best-known personalities in the North West. A
classically-trained tenor, he is making a welcome return to 'Our
Benny', having starred in it at the Liverpool Empire in the 90's.
He is a radio legend through his shows on Radio City, in particular
the 'Bride of the Week' feature, where he won the Whitbread
Radio Personality of the Year Award 3 times. Johnny plays the role
of the rich merchant- Mr Lawrence.
Our Benny
Writer and Director Anne Dalton say’s:- "I’m thrilled to have
Chris on board. He is a consummate professional and all round
musical theatre performer. I am really pleased that yet again we’ve
managed to secure the talents of a local actor for the production…
that’s something which has been really important to me, to engage
the cream of local talent. I can’t wait to start rehearsals!"
Our Benny opens at
the Liverpool Empire Theatre on 12 November 08 to 22 November 2008. Tickets available
via
www.ticketmaster.com or from the Empire Box Office. |
