MTV
LIVERPOOL MUSIC WEEK
THE UK’s biggest indoor winter
music festival returns to Liverpool and with a peppering of ticketed
shows already announced including Goldfrapp, Dizzee Rascal, Black
Kids, and an already sold-out show with Vampire Weekend. We
are pleased to announce the second wave of acts for this year’s MTV
Liverpool Music Week, sponsored by edc by Esprit. Featuring
some of the UK’s hottest acts of the moment, this is one of several
teaser announcements which we will be releasing over the next few
weeks, creating one of the finest festival agendas of the year.
We have some very special acts confirmed for this year’s Opening
night performing across various venues throughout the city.
Kicking things off on Thursday 30 October 2008 at Nation is without
doubt one of the UK’s most influential post punk bands: legendary
Manchester band The Fall, who released their 27th studio album this
year. Formed in 1976, The Fall and their enigmatic frontman
Mark E. Smith’s cult following has kept them at the top of
their game and they are responsible for influencing many major
artistes including Franz Ferdinand, The Smiths, LCD Soundsystem,
Nirvana and the Happy Mondays. As well as being championed by
BBC Radio 1’s John Peel from early on in their career, Peel also
credited them as his favourite band of all time.
The Fall are a band that has stood the test of time and remain as
influential today as they ever was. The Fall + Guests,
Thursday 30th October, Nation, Tickets on sale now, £16+BF
On the same night, the unmissable Martha Wainwright headlines
Liverpool’s Philarmonic Hall. Sister of Rufus & daughter of
the legendary Louden Wainwright III, Martha is a highly celebrated
songwriter in her own right will be making her Liverpool debut at
one of the city’s most historical musical venues. Following
the success of her critically acclaimed second album, this very
talented soulful songstress is set for worldwide stardom following a
hugely successful 2008, proving that SHE could be the unassuming
superstar of the Wainwright family. Martha will be joined by
aussie siblings Angus & Julius Stone. This pleasantly
unassuming duo, moved to the UK following a chance meeting with
Travis frontman Fran Healy, having spotted the pair performing, he
invited them to come to his house to work on some demos their
critically acclaimed album A Book Like This was born. They are
refreshingly modest about their talent and remain non plussed
regarding their success. As this album recently went gold in
Australia and on the other side of the world, a successful UK tour
supporting Newton Faulkner and supporting David Gray was book-ended
by their own sold out London Shows. This event will be one of
the most memorable performances of this years festival and proves
the quality of acts we have in store for you this year. Martha
Wainwright & Angus & Julius Stone, Thursday 30 October 2008,
Liverpool Philarmonic, Tickets on sale now, £16 to £22.50+BF.
If Opening night gets you in the mood for more music, be sure to
head over to Nation the following night on Friday, 31 October 2008
for the Bestival Reunion Tour. Following their sell out IOW
festival last week, Bestival have teamed up with LMW & local
promoter Evol to put together a bolstering line-up to keep you
entertained. We welcome back for their 2nd consecutive LMW
appearance, headliners Mystery Jets, who have recently released
their 2nd album to critical acclaim which was produced predominantly
by DJ legend Erol Alkan. Joining them as special guests are
aussie electronic duo The Presets, a heavy tour schedule over the
summer at some of the UK’s hottest festivals, has built this bands
fanbase to even greater heights. The bands unique 80’s
electronic sound even brought them to the attention of the legendary
Daft Punk, who invited them on their Nevereverland Tour, without
doubt one of the hottest acts of the year! Others on the bill
include Kissy Sell Out with his not-to-be missed live show, Sombrero
Soundsystem, the ever entertaining naked breakdancing Cuban Brothers
(has to be seen to be believed!) and BBC Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank.
Bestival Reunion Party at Nation on Friday, 31 October 2008, tickets
on sale now, £15+BF, 8pm to 2am.
We’re also pleased to announce artist additions to shows already on
sale. Ladyhawke one of the hottest acts of the moment and
Magistrates, a fresh, cutting edge and unashamedly sexual band that
play music for the mind, feet and hips. Hailing from Essex,
this 4 piece were one of the highlights from BBC Radio 1’s Big
Weekend. Both complete a fantastic line-up for Black Kids
headline show at Nation on Saturday 1st November.
For Dizzee Rascal’s Sunday, 2 November 2008, slot at Liverpool
University - support will come from electronic trio Newham Generals,
Smurfie Syco & Chromeo.
Famous for its non restricted musical policy Liverpool Music Week
features music from every genre imaginable including indie, rock,
electronic, funk, soul, latin, nu wave, jazz, and world music and
this year is no different. This year Liverpool Music Week has
partnered with MTV and is sponsored by edc by Esprit to coincide
with this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards which will be taking place
in Liverpool on 6th November as part of the city’s European Capital
of Culture celebrations. Delivering a week long festival of
music around this year’s 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, delivering a
world class line up of acts combined with a host of fresh and
emerging talent offering these stars of the future a platform to
perform, this year incorporates more innovative shows, sounds and
beats, welcoming more artists from outside the city while increasing
the number of slots for Liverpool artistes both old and new.

Science minister reveals new figures on growth in UK space industry
THE UK's space
and satellite telecommunications industry has seen its turnover
nearly double in the last seven years and looks set to continue to
grow strongly, Science and Innovation Minister Ian Pearson will tell
a major international gathering in Glasgow this week.
The UK space industry continues to show strong growth, with the
sector growing by nearly 8 per cent in 2006/07 and an overall
turnover of £5.8 billion, a new report has found.
The Size and Health of the UK Space Industry 2008 report shows that
services continue to be the dominant sector in terms of both overall
size (85 per cent and worth £5 billion) and growth (8 per cent).
The report also reveals that total employment in the UK space
industry stands at nearly 19,000, with over 1,600 new jobs created
in 2006/07. Of the total, more than 5,800 jobs in the systems
sector are amongst the most highly skilled in the UK economy, with
60 per cent of staff holding a first degree and one third of these
also having a second degree.
The Science and Innovation Minister Ian Pearson, who will launch the
report at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Glasgow
tomorrow, said that the Government recognised the importance of the
space industry.
He said:- "Space is increasingly important in all our lives.
Satellite communications have made the massive growth in digital TV,
global monitoring telephony, internet traffic and other broadband
services possible. They play a vital role in understanding how
our climate is changing. The space industry makes a
significant contribution to the UK economy. By its very nature
it's highly innovative and is one of the highest value adding
sectors. It will play a significant part in driving forward
the UK's future knowledge economy.
The UK should be proud of its world leading capabilities in
telecommunications and small satellites.
Achievements this year include the completion of the Skynet 5
constellation built by Astrium and the launch of five RapidEye
satellites based on the Surrey Satellite Technology Limited
platform. Alphasat, being built in Britain, is set to bring
affordable communications to the developing world."
The theme of this year's 59th IAC, last held in the UK in 1987, is
'from imagination to reality' and starts on Monday, 29
September 2008.
The event is being held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference
Centre and opens to the public from 4pm Wednesday, 1 October 2008
through to 12 noon on Friday, 3 October 2008.
On Friday, 3 October 2008, the winner of the joint BNSC/SSTL Space
Experiment Competition, which challenged 14 to 19 year olds in UK
schools to design and build a small compact satellite instrument to
by flown in space in 2010, will be announced by South Korea's first
astronaut, Soyeon Yi.
A new UK Space Directory is also being launched at the IAC.
The publication lists over 150 organisations involved in this sector
of the UK economy. It has been produced in partnership between
the Society of British Aerospace Companies, the Aerospace and
Defence Knowledge Transfer Network, and the British National Space
Centre (BNSC).

MacMillian Cancer Support National Coffee Morning
IT was the MacMillian Cancer
Support Coffee Morning on Friday, 26 September 2008 and we headed
into Liverpool to take a look at Bolland & Lowes' coffee morning in
the Vanilla Factory. In side the office we found that all work
had stopped, with the staff's family and friends popping in for
snacks and drinks, even the Mayor of Liverpool popped in! Also
around the town, other people, including Rainhill Rotary Club and
local shop News From Nowhere, joined in, with hundreds of people
throughout the UK, to raise valuable funds for Macmillan Cancer
Support.
These are a few snaps
of the events around Liverpool and at Bolland & Lowes...
