St
Luke’s Church, Formby Harvest Festival
ON the weekend of 26/27 September
2008, St Luke’s Church celebrated the age-old custom of Harvest
Festival. On the Saturday evening, there was a ‘bring
and share’ supper with a Scottish flavoured Barn Dance.
There was a good-sized attendance in the old Church Hall on Kirklake
Road, where the delicious buffet supper was set out on tables for
the guests. The dancing was most professionally led by the
vicar, Rev. Harvie T Nicol, who had even supplied the music.
Everyone agreed, on the following day, that it was a great success.
On the Sunday there was a change of
emphasis. There was a Harvest Holy Communion Service with
healing, which was followed by a 10.30 Harvest Parade Service.
At the Parade Service Cubs, Beavers, Girl Guides, Brownies and
Rainbows paraded their flags and filled some of the pews in a full
church. At the close of the service, the Beavers were
presented with their new flag. The sermon/talk was given by
Jill Ball, their SAS link Missionary in Ecuador. Jill was
presented with a cheque, for £5,500.86p, which had been raised by
the church in its Lent project. In the afternoon, the
decorated Church was open for visitors to see the harvest gifts, the
flower decorations and scarecrows while the Meeting Room had posters
displaying the work of this lively Parish Church. Refreshments
were also available. The event closed at 5 o’clock with
another Harvest Holy Communion Service with a choir who sang the
anthem ‘Look at the World’ by John Rutter.
Funny News for this
week, part 2... "Exploding custard leaves road deserted!"
ON 28 September 2008 an HGV had
erupted as it carried 60,000 tins of custard and rice pudding to a
local supermarket, along the A382 in Chagford, Devon, according to
local and national press. The driver was saved, thanks to passing
motorists, who stopped the truck after they spotted the fire. Quickly the fire consumed the HGV and then the 26 tonnes of Ambrosia
custard and rice pudding cans began exploding. However, a spokesman
from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told the media that
there were no casualties and the incident itself was accidental in
nature. |
