Search for the heroes in Liverpool
A SEARCH is
underway for unsung heroes and heroines in Liverpool who help keep
children safe. The inaugural Liverpool Safeguarding Children
Board Awards take place in December, and nominations are being
sought for people who put the safety of children first. It
could be an individual, a group or a specific project that has made
a difference to the lives of young people in the city.
Examples include a child social worker, nursery staff member, a good
neighbour or someone who helps out with a local group or club for
young people.
The event has been organised by the Liverpool Safeguarding Children
Board, a group of 40 organisations. They agree how different
services and professional groups such as the city council,
Merseyside Police, Liverpool PCT and the NSPCC need to work together
keep youngsters free from harm.
Councillor Ron Gould, executive member for health, care and
safeguarding, said:- “Keeping children safe from harm and
improving their well being is hugely important to us. There
are many unsung heroes and heroines who quietly go about making life

Youngsters tell Tales
VAMPIRES,
trolls, dragons, gods and banshees will be brought to life thanks to
the imagination of Merseyside’s youngsters. Hundreds of
secondary school, college and university students will recreate
European myths at Tales, a special art event being held at St.
George’s Hall until Thursday, 2 October 2008.
Liverpool Culture Company organised the project which saw artists,
film makers, drama experts, choreographers, writers and animators
work closely with 16 educational organisations across Merseyside.
In 2006 arts and education representatives from Liverpool, Knowsley,
Wirral, Sefton, Halton and St Helens came together to create a
partnership programme for 2008. Each borough chose a European myth
or tale to explore using the specialist skills of their
organisations. Next week, the young people will come together
to showcase their work.
Phil Redmond, creative director and vice chairman of Liverpool
Culture Company, said:- “Tales is one of the Culture Company's
key creative education programmes and has given young people across
Merseyside the opportunity to let their weird and wonderful
imaginations run wild.”
Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council and vice
chairman of Liverpool Culture Company, said:- “Celebrating
European heritage is an important part of our Capital of Culture
year and it’s an inventive way to bring some really fascinating
stories to life using a mixture of traditional performance and 21st
century technology.”
The performances will take place throughout St. George’s Hall,
with students, aged from 12 to early twenties, recreating their
stories in the cells, courtroom, corridors and Concert Hall.
Each establishment involved specialise in arts, performance and
media. Those taking part are:
Carmel College, De La
Salle School, Fairfield High School, Halewood College, Liverpool Hope
University, Liverpool John Moore’s University, Maghull High School,
Notre Dame Catholic College, Rainhill High School, Rock Ferry High
School, Weatherhead High School, Wirral Metropolitan College, St
Augustine of Canterbury Catholic High School, St Helens College, St
John Bosco Arts College and Uplands Holly Lodge Girls College
Toxteth TV and digital media group Onteca worked closely with the
young people to help create innovative multi-art pieces, using 3D
production and theatre workshops.
