Our
Benny - Back Stage...
THE well-known
tale, Silas Hocking's, 'Her Benny' has been renamed
and revamped and put on by Scarisbrick based ABD Productions. This
is a lavish story that is both simple and powerful, making it idea
for all ages to enjoy.
The new version is still true to Silas
Hocking's original classic tale of two youngsters' battle to survive
in Victorian Liverpool. It following the fortunes and the life of a
character called Benny, as well as the life of his little sister,
Nell. This musical version has many catchy, rousing song and dance
numbers, as throughout the story, Benny fights poverty and
injustice. Some of the action you experience in this high class
stage show is disturbing, some will make your laugh, some scenes
will make you cry and others will just make you want to sing. This
is a well-rounded production and one of the best we have seen for a
long time. This is truly a fantastic end to the Capital of Culture
year of theatre events as the Empire gets ready for the normal Panto
season. The shows writer and director Anne Dalton says:- "It
was incredibly important to me to use Liverpool performers for 'Our
Benny', as it's our special year. The eyes of the world are on the
City. It's a much-loved Liverpool tale; who better to convey it than
local performers. The line up really is first class, I'm really
looking forward to working with Sam, Bernie, Emma and Johnny as I
know they're all just perfect for their individual parts."
The background to the
show is just as impressive as the show itself and it remains one of
Liverpool's best-known theatrical productions. If you have not

We went back stage to take a look at what was going on the day
before the production opened to the public on 19 November 2008. It
was frantic backstage and on stage, as lighting rigs were hoisted
into place, sound checks carried out and stage fittings finished...
These are a few of the photos we took on the 18 November.
It was amazing to see just what had to be done to make this
appealing musical work. For more information about this show, please
