Formby pull to within 2 points of league leaders Lions with a
game in hand after an emphatic victory.
Town Green Lions
0-4 Formby JSC A
Town Green welcomed Formby A to Winifred Lane today on a blustery
but bright afternoon. The pitch had clearly suffered at the hands of
god overnight and the park looked very heavy for this fixture before
the start.
The pitch though was
of little significance as the teams faced off before the start, both
sides clearly eager to get this battle under way. It was Town Green
who had the better of the opening exchanges, pressurising Formby’s
back line and forcing Oliver Sutton - Formby’s first half keeper
into action with several great saves during a goalmouth melee.
That said, Formby have shown in the past that turning defence into
attack is an art they have mastered, and today was no exception. On
8 minutes Joe Maybury intercepted a poor Town Green clearance and
charged at the home side’s goal and with a change of pace he beat
his markers and poked home Formby’s 1st of the game.
From the restart Town
Green attacked and for the next 5 minutes a fantastic display of
grit, passion, determination and bravery was witnessed from both
teams with many strong, last minute tackles being made at each end
of the pitch. Then on 16 minutes Formby’s 2nd goal arrived.
Sam Rimmer and Joe Maybury battered their way out of midfield and
through Town Green’s defence. After executing a wonderful 1-2, Sam
Rimmer hammered home the travellers 2nd. The referee who I
felt had a decent half with difficult ground, blew on time with the
score 2–0 to Formby.
What happened from
the restart was quite superb as Formby grabbed their 3rd goal of the
day and took the game beyond Town Green. Oliver Sutton, Formby’s 1st
half keeper made an intelligent left side run to receive a well
weighted pass from Lewis Doyle and still with a lot to do he fired
home Formby’s third with great skill. Town Green though, would
not give up and pressed hard to bring this game back within their
reach. Luke Warden, Ross Turpin and Mathew Smith all worked hard
during this half to protect Formby’s second half keeper Lewis Hill
and kept his involvement to a minimum.
Formby’s last goal of
the afternoon came on the 35 minute mark and saw Oliver Sutton
adding another goal to an impressive days work. Lucas Gabriel
working tirelessly on Formby’s right wing tricked his marker and
brought Brian Thomas into play The resulting shot from Brian Thomas
was saved well by Town Green’s keeper but his clearance fell to the
feet of a charging Oliver Sutton who fired home with great belief.
I cant’ praise
enough, the passion, sportsmanship and commitment from these young
men on both teams today. The pitch was heavy and caused the ball to
“plug” on many occasions and this invariably leads to mistimed
tackles and today was no exception although none with intent.

Trinity Blue stretched their lead at the top of the division with
2nd placed Fleetwood dropping points.
Trinity Blue 6-1
Redgate Black
Trinity entertained
Redgate on an excellent rookery pitch despite the recent weather.
Trinity Blue continued their great form with a very good display
today. Straight from the kick off they pushed forward not letting
Redgate settle. Lewis Harwood opening the scoring with a cross
come shot floating into the far corner. Joe Wallbank added a
2nd following a great save from the keeper. Joe followed up the save
to place a left foot shot into the corner. Andy Thorpe then
got himself on the score sheet tapping in from close range after
Jamie McCormack had his effort saved. Lewis Harwood went onto
complete a 1st half hat trick with the pick of the bunch, a screamer
from the edge of the box. Sam Wallbank finished off the 1st
half scoring with a close range effort to send Redgate into the 2nd
period with a 6 goal deficit.
Redgate came out for
the 2nd half far stronger, going close on a few occasions but Luke
Dempster was in great form and Cameron Rimmer and Michael Cottam
snuffed out Redgate's forwards allowing Trinity to attack.
Redgate pressed right down to the final whistle and grabbed a great
goal after some slick passing they set the striker clear who
finished with great composure.
Man of the match was
hard to pick both Jamie McCormack and Lewis Harwood shared it today
Jamie for his all round performance up and down the pitch all game
Lewis for his vision and awesome finishing.

In premiership terms a point apiece saw both Ainsdale and Birkdale
challenging for a Champions League place.
Ainsdale B 2-2
Birkdale United N
Both teams made a
slow start to the game with neither side really taking control. The
cold and windy conditions didn’t help either as the game flowed from
end to end. The 1st goal came after 25 minutes when Liam
Jackson picked up the ball just inside the penalty area and fired it
past the Ainsdale keeper. Within 2 minutes, Birkdale extended
their lead when Greg Rawsthorne’s through ball was picked up by Liam
Jackson who cleverly lifted it over the advancing Ainsdale keeper
and that lead was maintained until half time.
After the break, the
game continued in pretty much the same way as the 1st half but with
Ainsdale showing a bit more passion and commitment. They got
their reward after 8 minutes when a shot from the edge of the area
crept just under the bar. Birkdale squandered a number of
chances to put the game beyond Ainsdale and then paid the price for
their misses when after 22 minutes, Ainsdale got the equaliser that
they had been searching for.
A disappointing
performance from Birkdale in a game they should have won but on
balance, Ainsdale probably deserved the draw for their greater work
rate and commitment. Man of the Match this week was Liam Jackson for
his 2 goals.

Only 1 point separated Ainsdale and Town Green at the start of play
today.
Ainsdale 1-5 Town
Green
Town Green won the
midfield and controlled the match from start to finish. The
only goal in the 1st half came from a corner, which fell to Jacob
Henderson to hit home from close range.
In the 2nd half and
very early on Liam hit a blistering shot for Ainsdale into the top
corner to level the score. Town Green pushed on and 2 goals
from Jak Gray, 1 inside the box, the other striking the ball over
the keeper basically sealed the win. Peter Armitage hit a shot
from outside the area low with power to score the 4th and just
before full time James Edgar completed the scoring with a ball into
the top corner.
Ainsdale's Man of the
Match was Danny Lowery who worked tirelessly in defence against a
very strong Town Green Team. |
