The final 8 teams fought it out for a place in the semi finals
of the Jim Rourke Cup.
Ormskirk FC 1-1 Town Green Panthers
(aet – Town Green won 2-1 on penalties)
In a game that was packed with everything, including 2 teams right
up for the game.
A couple of mins into
the 1st half Ormskirk were awarded a free kick right on the edge of
Town Green’s box, Matthew Hampson Birks stepped up struck it so
powerfully beat everyone yet the post got in the way. From
this point it just turned into a end to end 1st half with both teams
having numerous chances but were finding it hard to get past to
goalkeepers in exceptional form. A nil nil scoreline seemed just.
The 2nd half just
carried on where the 1st left off, with both teams attacking yet it
looked to me that these 2 goalkeepers wanted to be here all day and
the half similarly ended goalless.
But there are no
draws in the cup and extra time began. Neither team was prepared to
settle by just defending and just before half time Town Green scored
as the ball bobbled over the line.
In the 2nd half
Ormskirk pressed and pressed and following a superb through ball
from Andrew Torr to Matthew, he ran in on the goalkeeper, who again
made himself big and as a result Matthew fired narrowly wide. Then
from the goalkeeper’s kick Ormskirk attacked again, Ball crossed
from the right and Luke Charnock shot narrowly wide but then with 4
minutes to go Ormskirk attacked down the left ball fed to Luke
Charnock fired the ball on target which took a wicked deflection and
went in.
It then went to
penalties which Town Green won 2-1.
Ormskirk men of the
match were Kieran Leese Terry, Luke Eckersley, Fraser Connell, Josh
Fearon, Andrew Torr, Matthew Hampson Birks, Jack Charnock, Luke
Dwane and Luke Charnock.

Trinity maintained top spot after seeing off there most local rivals
in style.
Southport FC Juniors 0-5 Southport Trinity
Trinity made the short trip to Meols Park hoping to bounce back from
last weeks cup defeat to a very impressive Redgate Yellow.
The Blues started very strong with Lewis Harwood and Sam Wallbank
both testing the keeper early on, Cameron Rimmer also went close
before Sam Wallbank opened the scoring following up a Lewis Harwood
shot. Juniors tried hard to get into the game but Andy Thorpe
and Jamie MCormack kept things tight at the back. Lewis
Harwood then doubled the lead when the keeper kicked a clearance
straight to him which he fired into the bottom corner.
Trinty never let up
going into the 2nd half creating some excellent chances. Lewis
Harwood added the 3rd, firing low across the keeper and then
completed his hat trick from just outside the box after good work
from Fabrizio Anelli. Southport Juniors struggled to cope with
Trinity Blue as they flowed forward Cameron Rimmer crossing for Andy
Thorpe to head in. Man of the match was hard to pick after so
many good displays but Andy Thorpe got it after a fine display.

The league took 2nd place this week as it was decided which teams
will meet at Burscough in the Cup Final.
Billinge 1-0 Formby JSC
Billinge progressed to their First Cup final since joining the
Craven Minor League last season with a display of guts,
determination and no little skill as they out fought a very good
Formby side. The way Billinge played was personified in the
form of Tom Saxon and Elliot Bradshaw who were both outstanding
today and Fredders who took his goal well and who created lots of
problems for Formby's defence. It was always going to be a
close game with both teams' League record almost identical and so it
proved.
Billinge set their
stall out early on with the game played mostly in Formby's half but
then Formby woke up with a shot which hit the top of the bar, came
out and was then hit over the bar. This was to be Formby's only real
clear cut chance of the game, other than a goal mouth scramble after
25 minutes which Hamilton gathered gratefully. The Formby
keeper playing almost as a sweeper, playing the ball into touch when
pressured by Attrill and Fredders and it was Fredders whose point
blank range shot was blocked for a corner after being fed by Attrill
with Bradshaw then heading over which saw Billinge finish the half
the strongest.
The 2nd half was only
a minute old when the only goal of the game arrived with Bradshaw
winning the corner after a typical driving run. He fed Jones from
the corner whose peach of a cross to the back post was met by
Fredders and his downward header was powered into the bottom corner
to make it 1-0.
Formby A are an
excellent side and their determination was met with the resiliance
of Saxon, Connolly and Ayre, the latter on as a 2nd half substitute.
The defence held firm and it was they who won Billinge the game as
they shut up shop, ably assisted by Jacko on at left Midfield, in
the latter stages of the 2nd half.
As Formby chased the
game , Deano who came on as a 2nd half substitute , twice fed
Fredders who had one shot narrowly wide and one which just dipped
over the bar.
Overall an excellent
result against a team who came to win and who would feel very
disappointed not to force the game to extra time. MOM- Saxon
and Bradshaw |
