The deserved break
came on 6 minutes when Joe Maybury received the ball out of Formby’s
midfield. Maybury charged at the Redgate keeper who responded by
going to ground to meet the threat and with quick feet Maybury
rounded the keeper to take the travellers into the lead.
Redgate rallied from
the restart and attempted to channel the ball through the centre of
the field, utilizing the services of their number 34 who looked a
strong talented player. Each time though, Formby stood strong with
Luke Warden and Matthew Smith executing some wonderfully timed
tackles at Formby’s rear.
Formby’s 2nd goal
arrived at the 13 minute mark with a fantastic left foot shot from
Oliver Sutton. Sutton chased down a Redgate defender in what looked
a lost cause and pinched the ball off him; side stepped, and let
loose his trademark left.
The pattern of the
game continued with the greater possession I felt in Formby’s
favour. That said on 15 minutes Redgate won a free kick, taken well
the ball cleared the Formby wall to force Ross Turpin, Formby’s 1st
half keeper into action with a great save. 2 minutes later it
was Sam Rimmer who added his name to the score card with a fantastic
diving header after receiving a beautiful cross from Lewis Doyle.
Lucas Gabriel and
Oliver Sutton were working well on Formby’s flanks, adding pace and
allowing the Formby forwards to overrun Redgate’s back line on
several occasions. Formby’s 4th goal came by way of a Joe
Maybury corner that found Lewis Hill in the centre of the box, Hill
headed home neatly high to the Redgate keeper’s right. 36
minutes in Joe Maybury narrowly missed his 2nd of the afternoon as
he watched his long range free kick ricochet off the oppositions
cross bar.
This was a great game
of football to watch from the line today, both teams showed great
sportsmanship, battled hard, played with quality and put on a great
display of football. Formby’s management team awarded their “Man of
the Match” trophy this week to Matthew Smith for a solid skilful
display at Formby’s rear, clearing the ball today with great
intelligence. Almost every ball Matthew played found a Formby
colleague.
Ainsdale Juniors 1-1 Southport Trinity White
An early Conor Bligh strike gave the home side a deserved half time
lead. League leader’s Southport Trinity White dominated the
2nd half and equalised with number 25 scoring a well taken goal.
Today all watching mothers were sent home proud of their son’s
performance as Ainsdale’s whole team were awarded the man of the
match tag.

Already Champions Elect, Trinity proved too much for their nearest
local rivals.
Southport Trinity Blue 4–1 Fleetwood Hesketh
Trinity entertained 2nd place Fleetwood at the rookery today looking
to keep their impressive league form going.
Trinity settled in
very quickly and played some lovely football in the 1st half which
saw them race into a 3-0 lead, Jamie MCormack slotting in the 1st
from the edge of the box, Sam Wallbank adding a 2nd after his 1st
effort came back of the bar and Joe Wallbank scored the 3rd which
was a peach from well outside the box, firing into the far top
corner,
Andy Thorpe and
Cameron Rimmer kept things very tight at the back but with half time
approaching Fleetwood’s 1st effort on goal was saved well by Luke
Dempster only for their player to finish off the rebound.
Trinity pushed
forward in the 2nd half passing the ball well. Lewis Harwood was a
constant threat today always showing himself for the ball and
looking to keep possession. Sam Wallbank added a 4th when he
flicked Lewis's cross in making the final score 4-1.

Formby 0-4 Southport Trinity
Formby FC Juniors six game unbeaten run finally came to an end on
Saturday at Altcar Lane as Southport Trinity ran out 4-0 winners in
the Harry Cope Quarter Final.
Formby began well
enough but it was Southport Trinity who took the early lead somewhat
luckily as a cross from the left was turned into his own net by Joe
but there wasn't much more he could have done. Formby battled
back well as Lloyd found Dylan on the right, he beat his man with
ease before sliding the ball through to Thomas but his shot was well
saved by the visiting keeper. Just as Formby were beginning to
play some good football Southport Trinity made it 2-0 after a route
one ball wasn't cleared and the striker had the easy job of putting
the ball into an empty net.
Straight after the
break Southport Trinity added to their lead with a deflected shot
which gave Shaun no chance in the Formby goal. Then came the
move of the match as Formby began to get stuck into the visitors
after giving them so much time to play in the 1st half. Max found
Ben who back heeled the ball to Lloyd who played an inch perfect
ball over the top straight into the path of Thomas who raced away
held the defender off before unleashing a shot that whizzed inches
wide. It wasn't long though before Trinity did grab their
fourth as a scramble led to the loose ball being fired home.

Town Green 6-2. Birkdale United N – Joseph Jackson Cup
Birkdale made a slow start to this game and allowed Town Green to
take an early lead after only 1 minute from a through ball that
caught the Birkdale defence square and flat footed. The 2nd
goal came after 11 minutes from another ball over the top of the
defence with the forward taking the ball round the advancing keeper.
Birkdale finally
started to string a few passes together and were rewarded with a
goal after 13 minutes scored by Greg Rawsthorne. 2 minutes
later Birkdale were unlucky not to be on level terms when Max Regan
put the ball into the back of the net only for it to be ruled out
for offside. After 18 minutes Town Green were awarded a free
kick on the edge of the penalty area, which was fired into the top
corner of the net. Continued pressure from Town Green saw them
grab a fourth goal after 23 minutes. Birkdale grabbed a 2nd
goal on the stroke of half time, scored with a rasping shot by Liam
Jackson.
The 2nd half was much
tighter although Town Green did have more of the possession. After
12 minutes, Town Green grabbed a fortunate 5th goal and a sixth goal
quickly followed.
This wasn’t the best
performance by Birkdale and Town Green definitely deserved to win,
but the score line flattered the home side. Man of the Match
was awarded to Liam Jackson who caused the Town Green defence
problems every time he got the ball.

Town Green 6 - 0 Southport FC
Straight from the start Town Green opened up the Southport defence
and in the early minutes a corner ball was headed home by Paul
McKay. Town Green spurned several other chances before Jak fed
a ball to Peter Armitage who went through and scored Town Green’s
2nd goal. Southport did have the occasional break as the very
quick forward line kept Town Green's defence active.
Town Green went into
overdrive in the 2nd half as James Edgar set up goals for Henry
Brown and Tom Peterson. Peter Armitage scored a 2nd as he
picked up a ball and drove into the box to score. The last
goal came from James Edgar who finished the match as a contest but
credit to Southport who never gave up and played the game in a
fantastic spirit. |
