Vital community bus links for Crosby and Waterloo
MERSEYTRAVEL
has stepped in to boost vital community bus links in Crosby and
Waterloo, following overwhelming public demand. A new 151
service, set to launch on June 22 this year, will replace bus
services in Crosby and Waterloo lost after changes to the 62 and 50
commercial bus services and removal of the 51 service altogether.
This new move, fully funded by Merseytravel, will re-establish links
to vital community services and shops in the Brownmoor Lane, South
Road and Stuart Road areas of the town.
Councillor Mark Dowd, Chair of Merseytravel, said:- “We know
the removal of so many important commercial services in the Crosby
area has caused huge problems over the last two years or so.
We have listened and responded with this new subsidised service that
we hope will support many hundreds of people who have been
campaigning hard for the improved services they deserve.
Some people would be cut off from public transport altogether if it
wasn’t for Merseytravel stepping in and providing funding to bridge
the gaps in bus services.
We hope that the Local Transport Act
will give us the powers to do this in other areas where bus services
are a rarity. Local people should be at the forefront of decision
making in their area, as in this case.”
The new 151 service, operating every half hour (from 6.30am to
6.30pm) Monday to Saturday, will make all important links to medical
services on Kingsway, Crosby and community services, including
Waterloo railway station and local shops, on South Road, Waterloo.
It will also provide a link to main routes to Liverpool and
Southport.
Councillor Bob Roberts, a member of Merseytravel’s Integrated
Transport Authority and supporter of the campaign, was delighted
with the news. He said:- “The scattering of commercial
services around this area simply wasn’t good enough.
I know
Merseytravel has considered a number of options for making the
changes and both Mark Dowd and I have worked hard to secure the
much-needed funding for this route.
This investment opens up
access to so many more local services; some of which are vital to
local people.”
The new route will be operated by Stagecoach Merseyside and will run
from Waterloo Interchange via:-
· Brighton Road, South Road, Crosby Road North, Kingsway, Stuart
Road, Brownmoor Lane, Chesterfield Road, Moor Lane, Edge Lane, Water
Street, Green Lane and Quarry Road.
It will then return via:-
· Moor Lane Chesterfield Road, Brownmoor Lane, Stuart Road,
Kingsway, Crosby Road North, Brighton Road; to Waterloo Interchange. |
