Cycle Race In Town
ON 11 June,
2009, Southport played host to Round 6 of The Tour Series. A circuit
length of 1.3km was made up along Lord Street and 3 side roads and
lasted over one hour. This race was a fantastic boost to the resorts
2009 annual fun-packed programme of free events. In 2008, Southport
was the scene of large crowds for The Tour of Britain, which put it
on the map as a venue for top sporting events, and 2009 was not a
disappointment. Edward (Ed) Clancy MBE won what was an amazing Round
6. Sun and a light wind, gave Southport a very continental feel; one
that we hope made Southport look, on ITV4, every bit as good as it
felt that day. Well done to all involved. Also well done to all the
Merseyside schools who took part in the warm up races over
afternoon. Other fun activities ran through out the afternoon, with
lots of side shows, stalls, cheerleading and even a stunt show! Mat
McNally who is the Tour Series spokesman said:- "It was a
fantastic ride. Southport has been one of the best so far. It had a
very relaxed and freindly atmosphere to the event."
