Every patient who needed clot busting treatment received it within
target time
FOR someone
suffering a heart attack the speed with which they can get access to
a particular drug known as thrombolytic treatment can literally be a
matter of life and death. Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is
one of only three Trusts in the country who were able to give this
treatment to every patient who needed it within the target time of
30 minutes after arriving at hospital.
A heart attack is caused by a blood clot blocking one of the
coronary arteries or its branches & the clot busting drug (a
thrombolytic) dissolves the clot re-establishing the blood flow to
the heart muscle. The sooner the clot is dissolved the less damage
there is to the heart muscle.
Figures released by the Royal College of Physicians last week in
their annual report on heart attacks show that the Trust is 17%
above the national average of 83% for patients to receive the drug
within 30 minutes of arriving at hospital. The report also gives
figures for patients receiving the drug with an hour of calling for
help and again the Trust is above average with 89% against the
average of 72%.
Sarah Groves, Matron for Critical Care said:- "This result has
been achieved by the hard work of all staff particularly those in
Accident and Emergency & the Clinical Decision unit who have a
consistently high level of training & support from our Cardiac
Specialist Nurses. To be one of only three Trusts to have achieved a
100% record is very satisfying, but the real challenge is
maintaining it."
