The British Musical Fireworks
Championships 2009
THE 11th British Musical
Fireworks Championships were planned to take place over 9 October to
the 11 October 2009; sadly, for the very first time in its history,
Sunday's event was not able to take place because of "higher
than forecasted winds". This did not stop two amazing nights
of fantastic displays of pyrotechnic art, lighting up the sky above
the Marine Lake in Southport.
This year's winner was Flashpoint
Fireworks from Guildford. This team's display was planned with only
7 weeks notice after they stepped in to fill a gap left by another
team. They truly deserved the win, even though it was disappointing
that two other teams never showed off their talents, as Flashpoint
devised a show that was spot on, with only two very minor faults,
such that only a pyrotechnic might detect. Their display was well
choreographed: the music was excellently timed and good use was made
of the full display area. There was also a fantastic use of colour
and types of pyrotechnics with in Flashpoint Fireworks display.
Even Jason Mayers, the director of the team stood still at the end
of his display, stunned. "It was fantastic! I know we do
things well but that was amazing... nearly every thing was spot on.
Even though I was given seven weeks notice, I only had one week to
plan our 16 minute display. I did not think it was going to go to
plan as well as it did", he told our editor, Patrick
Trollope, on the night. His statements were echoed around all the
teams and also the crowds, who were all blown away with it.
With Friday's fantastic displays and
Saturday's amazing shows over, all expectations were on the last two
teams to deliver a stunning night of fire and light. Sadly, as the
day drew on and the teams set up, the wind was not going to play
ball... Organisers and the two teams continued to get ready, with
the hope that the wind would drop, but as the event was due to open,
the wind picked up again.
Our editor, Patrick said:- "I
know the organisers and the teams did everything they could to see
what they could do to run the event. Unfortunately the wind just got
worse and worse. The performance had to be cancelled. At first they
tried to postpone it, but due to the nature of the event, this was
not possible. Also the forecast was for more wind on the Monday.
That did not happen, but all's well and good with hind sight."
A spokesperson for Sefton told the
press that:- "Unfortunately we had no other choice, due to the
very strong wind conditions. We tried to move it to the Monday, but
the logistics were so high and the chance we would have to again
scrap it was too big. We had to cancel the last night's show, with
public safety being our highest priority. Refund information can be
found on
visitsouthport.com."
Despite that small oops to the plan,
this event is still an amazing event and we truly look forward to
next year's displays! Well done to all the teams and also to all
involved.
