SHOOTING M62 ROCKET JUNCTION
MERSEYSIDE
Police Detectives are urging members of the public to come forward
following a shooting at a car at the Rocket junction at the end of
the M62 motorway on 27 November 2009.
The victim was driving his black Ford Focus along Broad Green Road
towards the Rocket junction, when he stopped at traffic lights it is
believed that a black Astra pulled up alongside and a firearm was
seen. On seeing the firearm the driver of the vehicle tried to evade
the offenders by going through a red light. As a result he collided
with a red Ford Focus being driven from the opposite direction.
Following the collision the offenders drove past and fired a number
of shots at the black Ford Focus before driving off against the flow
of traffic down Queens Drive towards Childwall Fiveways.
The driver and a two year old boy in the black Ford Focus were
uninjured, but the woman driver of the red Ford Focus suffered minor
whiplash injuries as a result of the collision. The occupants of
both cars were distressed by their ordeal.
A black Vauxhall Astra was found abandoned and burnt out a short
while later in Ashfield, Wavertree, detectives are eager to speak to
anyone who may have seen the vehicle being abandoned as they could
have information which could prove vital to the investigation.
At this stage of the investigation the motive for the shooting is
unknown, although it is believed to be targeted.
Detective Superintendent Martin Andrew, said:- "We are
determined to get these weapons and the people involved in this
incident off the streets of Merseyside. The offenders showed a
dangerous disregard for members of the public who were in the area
at the time, and it is pure good fortune, given the busy nature of
this junction, that no-one was injured or even killed, as a result
of their actions. The offenders who carried out this indiscriminate
attack on a busy route in and out of they city need to be caught. I
would appeal to members of the community who have any information
which could hlep us with our investigation to come foward. We will
not tolerate the use of guns on the streets of Merseyside and the
actions of these people are completely unacceptable. We will do
everything within our power to find those responsible and put them
before the courts. We will act on all information received in
connection with the use of firearms."
The junction of the M62 with the Rocket was cordoned off whilst
forensic examinations took place and was reopened at 9am on 28
November 2009. Merseyside Police would like to thank residents and
motorists for their patience and co-operation whilst the scene was
cordoned off.
House-to-house inquiries have been carried out and high visibility
patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the community.
Anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information is
asked to contact the Matrix team on:- 0151 777 5699, the Gun crime
hotline on:- 0800 458 1211 or Crimestoppers on:- 0800 555 111.

Makeover for Huyton Station
MERSEYSIDE Police has released CCTV footage of a man who they
believe may be able to help them with their inquiries regarding the
murder of 22 year old Anthony Cavanagh who was assaulted in the
Walkabout bar on Fleet Street, on Saturday, 24 September 2005.
Anthony Cavanagh died in hospital 11 days after he was assaulted and
a murder investigation was launched immediately.
DCI Tim Keelan, who is leading the investigation,
is appealing to
anyone who may have been in the Walkabout on the night of the
assault to come forward with information and he is particularly
interested in talking to the man featured on the CCTV who he
believes could have information which could be crucial to the
investigation.
Detective
Chief Inspector Tim Keelan, explained:- "Anthony, who was a
Royal Navy seaman, was on shore leave and out with friends on
Saturday, 24 September 2005, in Liverpool City Centre. At about
1.45am in the early hours of Saturday Anthony and his friends were
getting ready to leave the Walkabout and make their way home. As
they were walking through the bar we believe Anthony was confronted
by three men and it is possible that Anthony may accidentally have
bumped into one of these men earlier in night. One of the three men
who confronted Anthony is believed to have thrown a drink at him and
then a punch was thrown by one of the three. Anthony fell to the
floor and we believe he was unconscious from the moment he was hit.
Anthony was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and was
then transferred to the specialist Walton Neurological Centre where
he died on 5 October, 2005. I would urge anyone who was in the
Walkabout on the night of this attack to come forward and help us
with our inquiries. I would urge anyone who was in the bar and
witnessed the assault, or who has any information which could help
with our inquiries to come forward. In particular I would appeal to
this man featured in the CCTV stills, or anyone who knows them, to
come forward as they could have vital
information which could help us further our inquiries. Anthony
was out to enjoy himself with friends and was due to return to his
ship on the Monday. He didn't go out looking for trouble and his
family are devastated at the loss of their son and brother. We would
like to be able to offer the family and friends some
closure by finding out what happened
on the
night
and finding
the person responsible for the attack."
The offender who hit Anthony is described as white, muscular build
with short, brown hair. he was wearing a white T-shirt and hooded
top.
Anyone who was in the bar and witnessed the assault, or who has any
information which could help the police with their inquiries can
contact the incident room on:- 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers on:-
