INCIDENT INVOLVING A POLICE VEHICLE - DE VILLIERS AVENUE, CROSBY
VILLAGE
MERSEYSIDE Police are
investigating an incident which happened in the early hours of
Friday, 1 January 2010, in De Villiers Avenue, Crosby, in which a
man was found injured on the ground after having been detained
inside a police vehicle. Shortly before 2.30am, a police van
containing officers from the neighbourhood's 'Nightsafe'
patrol was called to a disturbance involving a group of revellers in
Moor Lane, close to the Yates public house (known locally as
'The George') and Sainsbury's supermarket car park. The
officers arrested and handcuffed two men at the scene - one for
being drunk and disorderly and one, a 23 year old, for possession of
a controlled drug - who were placed in the van. A third man ran away
and was pursued on foot by officers to nearby De Villiers Avenue.
The driver of the police van followed to provide support and as he
arrived a group of people were gathered in the street so he stopped.
After the van came to a halt the driver then noticed that one of the
prisoners was lying on the ground next to the vehicle and that the
sliding door of the van was open. The prisoner had suffered a
wound to the back of his head and, although conscious and breathing,
was incoherent and unresponsive. Police officers immediately put him
into the recovery position and called for an ambulance. The man -
who is aged 23 and from the Waterloo area - was taken to
hospital in Fazakerley and since been transferred to Walton
Neurological Centre where his condition is described as 'critical'.
His family have been informed. The second prisoner was
transferred by another police vehicle to a local police station,
along with the third man also arrested by patrol officers. No-one
else was injured during the incident The scene in De Villiers Avenue
was sealed off and the Force's Professional Standards Department, in
conjunction with its roads policing unit, are carrying out a
thorough investigation. The matter has also been referred to the
Independent Police Complaints Commission, who have deployed
investigators to the scene and are assessing the incident. Anyone
who was in De Villiers Avenue at around 2.30am and has any
information about what happened is asked to call Merseyside Police
