St
Luke's Formby Flower Festival
FLOWERS,
scents, music, stalls, exhibitions and refreshments were to be found
in the Meeting Room and Parish Church of St Luke in Formby. Placards
and notices attracted passers-by to pass through the decorated lynch
gate into the Church Yard, along the path and into a church. One
entered through a porch filled with flowers depicting Spring. Inside
one was regaled by beautiful floral displays. One then explored the
displays by walking down the aisle, which had decorated arches to
walk under. Imagination ran riot with displays on the Font, under
the Rose Window, on window ledges, at the war Memorial, in corners,
around the Pulpit, in front of the Choir Stalls, around the organ,
under the Lectern, on the Altar, surrounding the Cross and in other
places too! Exhibits were numbered and a guide given to all who
entered; in it there was the number, title, a short quotation from
the Holy Bible and information about each arrangement. Every flower
arrangement was sponsored and that was also noted in the guide along
with the name of the arranger.
Extremely interesting Guided History Tours took place each day round
the Church and Grave Yard.
Musically, during the Friday morning, after Morning Prayers, the
uplifting voices of children filled the resplendent Church. First
there was a Choir from Woodlands School who sang so beautifully.
Next, at lunch time, the Parish School, St. Luke’s Primary School
enchanted everyone in the Church with their angelic voices. Later in
the afternoon, a jazz band from Range High School enhanced the
occasion with their lively repertoire. In the late evening a concert
took place in the church performed by the very well known and highly
accomplished Amadeus Choir. On Saturday afternoon, the church
Organist, David Holroyd, gave an organ recital. He is widely known
for his playing. It was great to be able to sit, listen and watch
his playing displayed on a large screen on the wall. He always has
something interesting to say about each piece which he plays. On the
final day, after the Morning Services, a very talented 17 years old
youth, James Speakman, performed a further recital of organ music.
His programme choices were well balanced, and he played as if he had
been playing for many years. The audience were most impressed.
This was a wonderful three days in which the displays represented
the work being done by St Luke’s, in the Parish, and in Shyira,
Rwanda. Everyone involved are to be congratulated and thanked for a
lovely time, arrangers, performers, helpers, refreshment staff, and
sponsors alike.
All profits are going to support SAMS work in Lima, Peru and St
Luke’s linked parish, St Mark’s in Shyira.
