Red Arrows Fly-Past

ON Saturday, 26 June 2010, around
1pm, groups of people were to be seen clustered around the Promenade
and Pier areas of Southport, looking skywards and hoping to see the
Red Arrows. Others became curious and joined them. Around 1.30pm,
the formation team did literally Fly Past, but at a higher altitude
than expected and without their smoke trails, on approach to Lytham
and Blackpool, where a distant display was just visible. All
hopes of a return were soon dashed, but at least they had been seen.
They did come closer at around 3pm, but
still not that close. Elsewhere despite; or perhaps because of? The
England v Germany World Cup match, people happily took part in the
luxury of summer pursuits in the sunshine. As our photos
show, Southport was truly a seaside resort.

Home from Afghanistan

A PARADE took place in Liverpool,
on Wednesday, 30 June 2010. Soldiers of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment
marched smartly from Liverpool Anglican Cathedral to St George’s
Plateau, accompanied by a military band. Hundreds of well wishers
had gathered to welcome them back from their six month tour in
Afghanistan. There they have been playing a supportive role to the
Infantry, a very challenging role in extremely difficult terrain and
facing considerable danger on a daily basis. Captain Wilkinson,
speaking for the Regiment said:- "It has been a very
successful campaign." Their main effort had been to bring
everyone home safely. There had been no fatalities but
unfortunately, two soldiers had sustained serious injuries.
Relations with the local population had improved and a large area
especially round Nadi Ali is now clear and troops have been building
facilities like schools, helped by the locals. There is more to be
done and it is hoped to extend the work to other areas as
successfully.
Whatever their political views and ideas of the war in Afghanistan,
most people agree that these young troops are upholding their
country’s cause with great bravery and dignity and are proud of
them, as the hundreds of civilians and ex–servicemen present at the
home-coming bore witness. The troops are aware of this good- will;
also shown in the parcels they gratefully receive, and appreciate
it. We wish the injured well in their recovery and hope the rest
enjoy their time to relax and chill out with loved-ones and friends.
