Yani Tseng wins the
Women's Open Royal Birkdale 2010!
Photographs and
report by Patrick Trollope
AFTER a very hard week at the
Women's Open at the historic Royal Birkdale course, it was nearly a
repeat of the Open 2008
as the sun came out for the last rounds. The competition had many
surprises, but the biggest surprise was just how Close Hull came to
winning this year’s event. It was a hard hitting last round of what
has been a very interesting competition. On the very last round
Australian Katherine Hull took on Taiwan's Yani. Tseng had the
tournament since Thursday evening, but Hull had other ideas as she
hit back. By the 18th hole, the tension was electric, as both could
taste victory. Both were neck and neck, and Hall could see the kill
as Tseng's tee shot at the 18th found the sand. But it was not going
to be, as a slight error by Hull, as she attacked the green, left
her ball in the rough. This error lead to a nervous end to the hole.
Any chance for Hull to win faded as she under hit her third shot on
the 18th well short of the hole. An excellent third approach shot
ensured Tseng victory. Both played amazingly well. What was
remarkable about this event was that, despite the rain and on
occasions wind, it was very well received. We spoke to so many
people we lost count, some came from as far away as Japan; others
from Southport. The range of ages was amazing to see as well. What
had me most intrigued was a conversation with one of the players,
whose sadly I was unable to read the name of, after I got my wet
notes back to the car, who told us that, "Southport has been
so friendly. I have fully enjoyed myself here. I, sadly, had to back
out as I had injured my back, but I have still got a lot out of this
round. I have been all over the world and this has been one of the
best events due to the way people have treated us outside the
grounds. Southport is a fantastic place. I am also amazed by the
commitment and support all the officials and volunteers have given
to the players. then there is you, the media. You have been
fantastic as well!" Yep, still kicking myself for losing the
name... but to me it sums us the way I think most people felt about
the event. Despite the rain and the hellish damp conditions for the
main days, it was fascinating to see the ladies battling it out.
Well done to all who volunteered to help and also congratulations to
all the players for putting on such a fantastic spectacle of true
sportsmanship. I think the men have a lot to learn from you all!
