Lesley Garrett - Lytham Proms 2010
Report and
photography by Patrick Trollope.
WE were invited on Saturday, 21 August 2010, to a massive open air concert,
which celebrated everything great about the British spirit, to commemorate the
Battle of Britain. This amazing event was across the water from Southport in
Lytham, so not in Merseyside. The event resembled what was planned this year for
the Southport Veterans’ Fund which, sadly, did not happen. The event had 5,000
people attending the Pomp and Circumstance event that was headlined by opera
star, Lesley Garrett. I was amazed by Joanna Marie, whose voice was so clear and
for her age, amazingly powerful. No wonder why she got a multi album deal. She
also joined up with the headline act, Lesley Garrett, accompanied by the
Manchester Camerata, to perform a few numbers. The end of what was a very
friendly and well organised event was done in style, thanks to the pyrotechnical
skills of MDL Fireworks, Lesley’s fantastic voice and the Manchester Camerata
performing Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem. The atmosphere is really
special and the ending with such a stunning backdrop of fireworks was icing on
the cake. TV presenter, Jonathan Thompson, commented:- "Everybody had a great
time and even more pleasing was the fact it did not rain! Also to have battle
re-enactments, celebrations of soldiers and a flypast of the iconic Spitfire and
Hurricane, and one of the iconic Hurricanes on the East Beach, Lytham St. Annes,
along with military vehicles, re-enactments, mock camps and more, I can't think
of a better way to celebrate!" If we were to attempt anything like this on
Merseyside, I think it would be very difficult to rival such an impressive
event. Well done Fylde Borough Council and Cuffe & Taylor Ltd. and thank you for
the invite!
