POLICING AND FIRE SERVICE OPERATION SPARKLES THIS BONFIRE NIGHT
FOR the second consecutive
weekend, Merseyside Police recorded a fall in
the number of reported incidents despite the Halloween and Bonfire
Night period traditionally being one of the busiest times of year
for the emergency services.
Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue
Service and local councils had been planning the two weekends for
months and putting in place a wide range of activities for young
people across the county.
The Force recorded a 14% reduction in reports of
anti-social behaviour and criminal damage during the Halloween
weekend compared to the same period last year.
This weekend Merseyside Police recorded a 3% fall in
reports compared to last Bonfire Night period making it a 17%
reduction overall.
In addition, there were 116 fewer emergency and
non-emergency calls received on Friday, 5 November 2010 and
Saturday, 6 November 2010 compared to the same dates last year - a
4.8% reduction.
The previous weekend the
Force received 316 less emergency calls on Saturday, 30 October
2010 and Sunday, 31 October 2010 in comparison to the same dates
last year – a 22% reduction.
Chief Inspector Claire Richards said she was pleased the vast
majority of people enjoyed both weekends safely and responsibly.
Chf Insp Richards said:- "This time of year is one of the
busiest for the emergency services and together with our
partners we put in a lot of effort planning this operation.
We stepped up our
patrols in hot spot areas for anti-social behaviour across
Merseyside and allocated resources to put on events alongside
our partners for young people throughout the county.
It is very pleasing to see a continued reduction in the number
of incidents reported to us and to have so many young people
attend the activities put in place for them over both of these
weekends. It is only ever a minority of young people
who let the rest down and the positive comments we have received
from the community, as well as by the small number of incidents
of anti-social behaviour reported to us, is testament to the
younger generation that they do act responsibly and with
consideration."
As a result of visits to
retailers, the FIRST team - Merseyside Fire and Rescue
Service and Merseyside Police - seized six tonnes of illegal
fireworks over this period so far, preventing them from
being used anti-socially on the streets of Merseyside and
potentially causing serious injury to those whose possession
they come into.
The seizure of fireworks
includes 1,723 illegal bangers and 100kg of fireworks by the
FIRST team from a house in Southport on Bonfire Night. This
is the largest quantity of bangers ever recovered in
Merseyside and were confiscated following intelligence
received from the community that illegal fireworks were
being sold from the property.
A 50 year old man from the Southport area is
being investigated by the team.
Chf Insp Richards added:- "Merseyside Police has worked
hard with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to prevent the sale
of illegal fireworks across the county. These
seizures send out a clear message that we will not permit the
unauthorised sale of fireworks to take place. These fireworks
could potentially be a danger to the community and we will take
action against those who try to flout the law and jeopardise the
safety of others. Overall, this year's operation was
a real success and I would like to thank the vast majority of
people across Merseyside for acting responsibly this Halloween
and Bonfire Night.”
Group Manager Paul
Murphy, head of the Threat Response Group at Merseyside Fire
& Rescue Service, added: "The whole bonfire period has
been a success due to the efforts of a range of partner
organisations working together to keep our communities safe.
Intervention
work is carried out all year round to ensure bonfire night
goes without a bang and we would also like to thank
residents across Merseyside for helping the wider community
to enjoy a safer bonfire period by following fire safety
advice and highlighting build-up of bonfire material quickly
so that it could be removed by our teams."
