Afrobeat musical
extravaganza produced by Jay Z and Will SmithT
VUE Southport will screen a
special one-off performance of the stage musical FELA! live from the
National Theatre in London in January 2011 - the perfect antidote to
the New Year blues.
The performance of FELA! will be screened live, as part of Vue’s
National Theatre Season, via a special satellite broadcast at 7pm on
Thursday, 13 January 2011. The show, which was a Broadway hit last
year combines Fela’s energetic Afrobeat music with high-octane dance
and colourful UV costumes and will finish its sold out run at the
National Theatre on 23 January. Cinema goers will be able to see the
high-tempo and colourful performance in High Definition and Dolby
Digital 5.1 Surround Sound technology giving them the best seats in
the house.
Produced by music stars Jay Z and Will Smith the show tells the true
life-story of Nigerian political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti who
came to world fame through his music, which he used to protest
against the oppressive Nigerian government.
Fela took inspiration from the Nigerian Yaroba genre and combined it
with Highlife and Jazz to create his own genre - Afrobeat. Becoming
a music star in his own right, Fela chose to live, protest and even
run for government in his native Nigeria where he was viciously
attacked and nearly killed on several occasions.
Mark De Quervain, Sales and Marketing Director of Vue Entertainment,
comments:- “We are delighted to bring this amazing stage show
to our screens in January and provide the people of Southport with
the opportunity to see this international production at a great
value for money price. We will continue to offer a wide range of
choice throughout 2011, and have some great shows already planned,
including the National Theatre’s performances of Frankenstein, which
is being directed by Danny Boyle and will be followed by
performances of King Lear and The Cherry Orchard.”

A
healthier outlook for homes
LIVERPOOL’S groundbreaking
Healthy Homes Programme is celebrating the end of another successful
year of making homes safer and improving the health and lifestyle of
residents. The programme started in April 2009 and is a joint
project between Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Primary Care
Trust which aims to improve rented housing conditions and reduce
health inequality in the poorest parts of the city. By the end
of the month the Healthy Homes team will have visited more than
13,000 properties since the programme started, resulting in more
than £2.5 million of safety improvements being carried out by
landlords. There have also been 10,000 referrals for help and
advice on a wide range of health and wellbeing issues Trained
advocates meet face to face with tenants to identify housing
problems and associated ill health and living issues. Other
organisations also refer cases to the team who arrange for follow up
inspection and the repair of properties, and provide help and
assistance with wellbeing. Among the tenants who has recently
been helped by the Healthy Homes team is Claire Crawford, a mother
of two, whose health visitor told the team that the family were
freezing as they had no heating or hot water and repairs to the
heating system had not been initiated by her landlord. An
Environmental Health Officer (EHO) was assigned to the case and an
inspection was completed. The EHO contacted Ms Crawford’s landlord
who was informed that immediate repairs to the heating system needed
to be completed.
Claire said:- “My family are lovely and warm. I can give the
kids a nice warm bath and we are happily looking forward to
Christmas, as a bonus the repairs were completed on my birthday. A
big thanks to the city council for my birthday and Christmas
present.”
Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of Liverpool PCT, said:- “Claire’s
case is one of the many examples of how interventions have directly
improved the living conditions and health of tenants and their
families. Thanks to the programme hundreds of properties have had
repair work carried out by landlords to make homes safer and
healthier. I look forward too much more of the same success in the
New Year.”
In another recent case a Healthy Homes advocate was carrying out a
routine survey at a property in Everton, occupied by a young couple,
when he was told that they kept getting headaches. The advocate
noticed a strong gas smell within the property so he checked it with
a monitor which detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide
which is known as the silent killer. A safety check was
immediately carried out and a gas leak in the pipe work within the
property was detected. The gas was cut off immediately. Due to
such cold weather this meant the tenants were without heating so
Healthy Homes provided emergency heating. Similar cases of
carbon monoxide poisoning have been found by Healthy Homes advocates
across the city in private rented accommodation.
Councillor Tim Moore, cabinet member for the environment said:-
“The Healthy Homes programme is making a real impact in raising
the standards of rented housing in the city. Healthy Homes helps
prevent death and illness due to poor housing conditions and
accidents in the home, and while there is still a lot of work, to do
we are making very good progress.”
