Book Review:- "How To Keep A Pet Squirrel!"
THIS is an easily read, but an
entertaining book, suitable for animal lovers of all ages. Inspired
by a children’s encyclopaedic from 1910 when Red squirrels were
common, and keeping such pets was not considered as undesirable as a
rule. There is such a reference to the fact on the book cover but
perhaps that should have been emphasised more firmly inside. Despite
this, the background comments are illuminating, and the author’s
illustrations help pass on sound information in a most amusing way.
And 10p for each book goes to the Save Our Squirrels fund; very
pertinent in the North West! A worthy addition for one’s present
list; for an older children’s stocking, or an elderly aunt. There’s
just time to purchase before Christmas. Pritchard’s, in Formby, is a
main stockist and is sold at some other reputable book shops. The
book is also available on our on-line shop, but postage in time for
Christmas is no longer possible because of extreme weather
conditions.

St John Ambulance
helps out NWAS!
ON Friday, 18 December 2010 and
on Saturday, 19 December 2010, units of St John Ambulance on
Merseyside helped the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) to handle
999 calls in their specially designed 4 by 4 Ambulances. The
Ambulances were all manned by a team of volunteers, providing high
quality logistics and emergency services in areas that could not be
reached by traditional Ambulances. John Ambulance said:- "We
ask that the public take care with the treacherous road conditions
caused by the amount of snow and ice. Despite the adverse weather,
we responded to emergency calls, but we must stress that the public
should only use 999 in emergencies. We would also ask for people to
be Good Samaritans and help prevent accidents. Check if any
vulnerable family, friends and neighbours at this time are not
running out of staple foods and other essential items. Also please
particularly check on the welfare of those vulnerable or elderly
people, while this cold snap continues. Pedestrians must take extra
care too, especially those taking their children out and/or walking
their dogs. Wear bright or light coloured clothing with reflective
strips, when walking around during dusk and at night. If you do have
to go out in your car, please take an up-to-date first aid kit with
you. Also take any personal medication you might require, incase you
get stuck even if you are only going short distances by foot or by
car." If you want to make a difference in 2011, why not join
St John Ambulance? Get a free first aid guide and you could be the
difference between some one's life and death. Visit:-
