A last farewell to Sally Devine
IN last week’s
edition we reported the sad news
that Sally Devine had passed away. On Saturday, 29 January 2011
Southport Football Club held a minute’s silence at their home
fixture against York. Southport Football Club director, Haydon
Preece, told us "Haig Avenue was so quiet you could hear a pin
drop. We would like to thank the York fans for their participation
in our tribute to our friend and devoted fan, Sally. It just showed
how much respect she had of the Southport fans and away fans."
Her funeral at Southport Crematorium on Monday, 31 January 2011, was
extremely well attended. Her coffin had been draped with the
Merseyside Police Flag in remembrance of her service to the force as
a civilian officer. Many of her colleagues from the Police,
representatives from us at Southport Reporter and also from the
Champion Newspaper joined fans from Southport Football Club and the
family to show last respects at what was a very moving service. It
was so well attended that many could not be seated, showing just how
many lives she had touched with her friendly personality.
GIVE US A KISS LIVERPOOL!
EVERYONE hopes
for a kiss on Valentine’s Day, but management at St Johns Shopping
Centre are hoping for thousands of them this February as they play
host to a world record attempt. St Johns Shopping Centre will host
the British Red Cross’ attempt to beat the world record for the
number of lipstick imprints in one place in 12 hours on Saturday, 12
February 2011. The existing record of 2,302 kisses was set in
Istanbul in 2010 and St Johns retailers are hoping that everyone in
Liverpool will help to both smash the record and help raise funds
for charity. The first 2000 people taking part will be given a free
lipstick and asked to make their impression on hundreds of Big Red
Kiss cards to be displayed outside The Perfume Shop on the lower
mall. Radio City’s Claire Simonsen and ground crew will be on site
to make sure the event goes with a swing and the best lip impression
will win a romantic weekend for two in Paris. The event has also won
a lip smacking seal of approval from City Central BID, which
represents 650 businesses in Liverpool City Centre.
Participants will be asked for a suggested donation of £1 to the
British Red Cross who will be on hand throughout the day to give
lessons on how to give the Kiss of Life and how to perform CPR in an
emergency. Carol Cooper, marketing manager at St Johns Shopping
Centre Liverpool, explained:- “We thought that setting a
record for the most kisses in one place was brilliant and what
better time than Valentine’s Day to give it a try. We’re hoping that
as many people as possible, both women and men, will put on their
lippy or lip gloss and give us a kiss to help us both smash the
record and raise funds for the Red Cross.”
Alexis Fairclough, Senior Community Fundraiser from the Red Cross in
Merseyside, said:- “I would like to say a huge thank you to St
Johns Shopping Centre Liverpool, Radio City and the Business
Improvement District for their fantastic support in helping to
organise this fun-filled fundraising event. The Big Red Kiss is a
great opportunity for people to learn some vital first aid skills
and raise money to enable the Red Cross help vulnerable people in
crisis both here in Merseyside, across the UK and all around the
World. I know we can beat this record!! So come on down to St Johns
Shopping Centre on 12 February and pucker up!”
“Liverpudlians are world famous for their passion and what better
way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a kiss that can break a
record and save life.” said Ged Gibbons, Chief Executive of
City Central BID. |

THIS week
Liverpool Football club has not one, but two new players. Andy
Carroll who has been signed for £35 million and Luis Suarez, signed
for £22.5 million.
Liverpool has been
dropping on and off the pitch in its performance and it is hope that
these players will start to re-ignite the fire that one propelled
the team to cup winning glory and international fame.
Only time will tell
if this will happen, but as current manager Kenny Dalglish takes
charge, the Reds look like they will be getting their fight back.
