Report
for matches on 20
February 2011.
ON a cold grey February Sunday afternoon Southport Black were
entertaining league leaders Kirkby Woodpeckers. Southport adapted
much better to the conditions on a heavy Bankfield Lane pitch,
passing the ball well.
Southport took
control and the pressure finally paid off when they were awarded a
penalty for a foul in the box which was converted to give them a 1-0
lead.
Woodpeckers were
getting more frustrated as Southport continued to dominate the play.
Such was the dominance of the home side, Woodpeckers were fortunate
to come off only 1-0 down with Southport producing their best
football of the season.
Woodpeckers came out strongly at the start of the second half and
were rewarded with a goal following a corner to make the score 1-1.
This did not deter
Southport who again started to take control of the match and they
were rewarded with yet another penalty for foul in the box, which
was also converted, sending the keeper the wrong way.
Southport continued
to play the better football scoring a third which would have graced
the premiership; picking a ball up in their own area, four passes
later it was superbly finished off to give the home side a 3-1 lead.
Woodpeckers tried to
get back in the game but a superb save from the Southport keeper
denied them a goal.
The home side
continued to play the better football and scored a well deserved
fourth goal.
Woodpeckers pulled a
goal back towards the end this time being awarded a penalty
themselves to make the score 4-2.
On the day Southport
were superb and outplayed a very good Woodpeckers for the majority
of the game and deserve much credit for their continued progression
this season.
Well done to the
referee who had some difficult decisions to make and handled the
game well.
