The
Riverside Steam & Vintage Vehicle Rally 2011 Report and
photographs by P Trollope
THIS fantastic
event returned, over 16 April and 17 April 2011, on the outskirts of
Southport at the Riverside Holiday Park. This year’s event was held
under blue skies, and that and the fields made a fantastic backdrop
for a dazzling amount of full-size steam engines including Fred
Dibnah’s Steam Collection as well as his iconic Land Rover. That’s
was not forgetting the fascinating amount of miniature engines,
vintage and classic vehicles including cars, trucks, tractors,
motorbikes, plus military vehicles’. In fact, so many that we could
not get round to cover them all! These fantastic machines were not
the only attraction as the site offered many children’s rides,
including a vintage fairground with fully working steam gallopers
and donkey rides. Also an added attraction was a Ladies Marquee that
featured crafts and demonstrations. I lost count as to how many
trade stalls and food outlets there were on site, including Aunt
Nellies’ Tea Room which let customers sit and soak up the atmosphere
whilst enjoying period-costumed table service. If all that did not
captivate you, the event also offered local Michelin Star chef,
Nigel Haworth, who gave cookery demonstrations in the marquee and
signed books. To see what is scheduled to happen next year; and we
really hope it does run again; go to
riversidesteamrally.co.uk. This
event just gets better and better.
