UP, UP & AWAY..!
SYNEXUA, the world's
largest multinational company dedicated to the successful
recruitment and running of clinical studies with a Clinical Research
Centre in Merseyside, has helped celebrate the 25th Anniversary of
the National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) by entering approximately
1500 of its osteoporosis patients into a virtual birthday balloon
race.
The fundraising balloon race, which was organised by the NOS as part
of its 25th Anniversary Celebrations, started on Monday, 27 June
2011 and finished on Monday, 4 July 2011. It was an eco-friendly,
‘virtual’ balloon race, meaning it took place entirely
online. Using clever computer technology, all balloons entered into
the race received random boosts of energy to increase the distance
they travelled meaning that some balloons travelled further than
others. The winner of the race will be determined via the balloon
that has travelled the maximum distance. The winner will be notified
by 15 July 2011 and will be presented with £50 of high street gift
vouchers from the NOS.
Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the bones, causing them to
become weak and fragile and more likely to fracture. Approximately 3
million people in the UK are thought to have osteoporosis and there
are over 300,000 fractures every year as a result. The NOS is the
only UK wide charity dedicated to improving the diagnosis,
prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
Synexus has extensive experience in conducting clinical studies for
osteoporosis and in the last year alone has performed DXA scans –
used to detect osteoporosis – on over 50,000 patients. Synexus
understands the importance of advancing our understanding and
developing new treatments for this condition and has recently
pledged its support to the NOS by becoming a ‘Bone Builder
Investor’. Through becoming a ‘Bone Builder Investor’
and making a donation to the scheme Synexus is helping to
fund vital research into osteoporosis and helping advance
understanding of osteoporosis and improve the care of people with
the disease through innovative and ground breaking research.
Kate Kew, Corporate and Community Fundraising Manager at the NOS
said:- "We organised the virtual balloon race as an unusual
and fun way to help mark our 25th anniversary celebrations, and to
help raise additional funds. As one of our Bone Builder Investors,
Synexus was keen to help us celebrate our birthday and kindly
entered the race on behalf of over 1000 of its patients who have
been affected by osteoporosis. In total we had 2,500 participants in
the balloon race, all the money raised form this event will help
fund our vital work."
