A big boost for
biking beginners
INTERESTED in getting on
your bike this summer but don’t have the confidence? Want to begin
your journey from biking beginner to confident cyclist? Cycle
Aigburth has the answer!
The city’s successful cycling scheme, which is helping hundreds of
local people build cycling into their daily lives, launches its
‘Beginner Rides’ next week. Designed to build confidence, the rides
will take cyclists through a week by week, level by level
improvement programme.
The rides are the perfect starting point for local people who want
to take up cycling but need extra support, as well as being a great
opportunity to have fun, meet other people, get some exercise and
see the city’s sights on 2 wheels. And best of all – it’s all free!
The timetable for the first block of beginner rides, for August and
September, has just been released. Leaving from Mossley Hill
Hospital (Park Avenue) at 6pm, the hour long rides cover:-
23 August:- Mersey Promenade (level 2)
30 August:- Calderstones Park (level 3)
6 September:- Sefton Park Circular (level 1)
13 September:- Mersey Promenade (level 2)
20 September:- Liverpool City Centre (Radial Route 10) (level 3)
The rides are led by experienced cyclists, and everyone is welcome
to join. Children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult and all
participants must have a roadworthy bike to take part.
If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry. Cycle Aigburth has teamed up
with Cycle for Health Liverpool and has a limited number of pool
bikes available. To book your bike in advance, please phone Claudia
on:- 0151 233 5246 or via
email.
The Beginner Rides are part of Cycle Aigburth and Cycle Speke’s
ever-growing biking programme for 2011, including the popular
Cycling Sundays sessions.

SUPPORT AND HELP RIOT VICTIMS IN LIVERPOOL
VICTIM Support is calling
for donations from people in Liverpool who want to play a part in
restoring the harm done by this week’s riots through a new ‘Safe
again’ JustGiving appeal page.
The charity has already started working in affected communities and
will be supporting victims of these crimes long after the headlines
have faded. We can make an immediate difference by helping with
practical things like repairing doors and windows, helping replace
essential items lost by fires or other criminal damage, and sorting
out re-housing and insurance issues.
Javed Khan, Victim Support’s Chief Executive, said:- “The
riots that have devastated Liverpool have left a deep mark on
communities and individuals who have become innocent victims of the
shameless violence. It is vital that Victim Support does all it can
to help people rebuild their communities and lives.
By donating through our new JustGiving page, you’ll be helping
affected communities to find the strength to put these terrible
events behind them. Whilst the buildings get rebuilt, we mustn’t
forget the people that have suffered. Your donation will help us to
continue providing the support our communities need for as long as
they need us.”
Donating through
JustGiving as it is simple, fast and totally secure. Once
you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Victim Support and
make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK
taxpayer.

Sporting
challenge to Merseyside’s health workers
AN Olympic gauntlet is
being thrown down to all NHS staff in Merseyside. They are
being challenged to submit teams to the NHS North West Corporate
Games, taking place on Saturday, 17 September 2011, at Kirkby Sports
College. Hospitals and other NHS employers are asking staff to
take part in football, netball, basketball, badminton, rounders,
touch rugby, fun athletics, boccia and novelty events such as egg
and spoon races and welly-wanging! Around 25 health organisations
have signed up to take part and help plan the event, which is being
co-ordinated by The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust.
Lead organiser Amanda Oates, HR Director at The Walton Centre,
said:- "The NHS North West Corporate Games promises to be a
fantastic fun event and a great way for people to get into the
Olympic spirit. We are calling on all NHS staff in the North West to
get involved – either by taking part or by supporting colleagues on
the track, pitch or sports hall!"
Walton Centre staff have already submitted teams in football,
netball, rounders and badminton.
Julie Thompson from The Walton Centre, who is signed
up for the badminton competition, said:- "I play quite a bit
of badminton and I am really looking forward to a bit of healthy
competition with my colleagues in the North West! Our team is
already in training and we challenge other Trusts in the North West
to sign up and take us on."
The event is part of the NHS 2012 Challenge which aims to get as
many NHS staff as possible involved in physical activity in the run
up to the London 2012 Games.
Sue Henry, National Programme Director for the NHS 2012 Challenge,
said:- "I am delighted that the North West has embraced the
NHS Challenge in the way that they have and that staff are so
enthusiastic and supportive."
