Curry Club raises money for Aintree NHS Trust Scanner Appeal
EastzEast is to play host
to Liverpool’s first fundraising Curry Club on 7 October 2011. The event
is organised by Charlie Warmsley in aid of Aintree NHS Trust Scanner
Appeal and sponsored by TNT Post North.
‘With You We Can Scan’ is Aintree Hospital Charitable Funds £3m
appeal to bring a permanent PET CT Cancer Scanner to Aintree
University Hospital. This is especially meaningful to the area as in
Merseyside you are 37% more likely to die of cancer than anywhere
else in the UK.
PET CT Scanning offers much more accurate, detailed scans, meaning
clinical teams can stage and agree the best course of treatment for
a patient, reducing the need of exploratory surgery or unnecessary
treatments. This means that people have a better quality of life.
Lindsay Tilston Jones, Assistant Director of Fundraising, Aintree
University Hospitals said:- "We are delighted that the Curry
Lunch Club has chosen The Aintree Scanner Appeal, as the first
charity to be supported by this new and exciting venture. We are
aiming to raise, an ambitious, £3m to bring a permanent PET CT
Cancer Scanner to Aintree University Hospital and help to fight
cancer in this region."
In a novel approach to fundraising patrons will gather for a midday
feast in the popular curry house. It is the relaxed, sociable
atmosphere of a curry house that has delivered success for these
events since 1996. Launched in in Manchester it is now expanding to
Liverpool and Leeds.
Organiser Charlie Warmsley commented:- "The Curry Clubs
started as a benefit dinner for retiring rugby player Dewi Morris. I
decided to have a curry lunch rather than the rubber chicken and
soggy broccoli circuit that was the norm at the time.
It has grown exponentially from there. The informal atmosphere
created at a curry attracts a professional crowd who want to meet
and exchange ideas but in a casual manner, and most importantly it’s
always for a good cause."
All proceeds raised on the day, through raffle prizes, auctions and
donations, are presented to the nominated beneficiary. Over thirteen
years Curry Clubs has raised over £25,000 for charities from Cancer
Research, NSPCC, Lords Taverners, Wooden Spoon and Victim Support.
TNT Post North Managing Director Andy Goddard added:- "We are
always looking for ways in which we can give back to the communities
that we serve. The Curry Clubs are an excellent way to do this with
proceeds going to local charities and the event itself raising
awareness of each charity."
Speaker on the day is successful football manager Joe Royle and
entertainment will be provided by the talented comedian Sean Styles.

Jonathan Edwards
visits Merseyside to meet with some of the region’s most Inspiring
projects
ATHLETICS legend and triple
jump world record holder, Jonathan Edwards CBE, is visiting Sefton
in Merseyside to see what some of the area’s Inspire Mark projects
have been achieving.
As part of the visit, Jonathan will meet with local sports project,
Active Sports, based at Litherland Sports Park, which encourages
grass roots participation in sport. As an Inspire Mark project,
Active Sports aims to get young people, who have no sporting
background, involved in an excellent range of sporting activities.
During the visit, Jonathan will join children of all ages in a track
session, which will include a mass triple jump. Jonathan
Edwards, CBE, said:- "It is great to visit Sefton and see
young people of all abilities taking part in sport and enjoying the
personal challenges and sense of achievement that sport & physical
activity can bring.
The Active Sports project across Sefton and here at Litherland
Sports Park encourages people with no sporting background to get
involved, whilst also providing a platform to progress from beginner
level to elite level.
As we count down to London 2012 we want people from all over the UK
be inspired by this fantastic global event and I hope these Sefton
young people will keep up their enthusiasm and commitment for many
years to come."
Andy Worthington, Chair of the Northwest Steering Group for the 2012
Games, said:- "It’s exciting to see so many fantastic sporting
events taking place in the build up to the 2012 Games. The Northwest
has a truly inspiring variety of Inspire Mark projects that are
really making the most of the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to
England and I really hope this legacy lasts long into the future.
This only goes to prove how the Games is not just about London but
is having an impact throughout the entire country."
Cllr Mike Booth, Sefton Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure,
Culture and Tourism, said:- "It was a great honour for such a
sporting hero to visit Sefton and we are very grateful for the time
that Jonathan Edwards spent with our young athletes of the future.
We really hope that London 2012 can encourage more young people to
fulfil their potential and our Inspire Mark recognises the hard work
that is going on to boost participation in sport and physical
activity.
Of course Jonathan Edwards is also an inspirational figure and lets
hope his visit leaves a lasting impression on our young people for
years to come."
