Debi Gliori
visits Formby
Photographs and report by
Patrick Trollope.
THE Scottish author and
illustrator, Debi Gliori, who has written many books for children,
including the very popular Mr Bear series, was in Formby on Tuesday,
11 October 2011. During her career she has won the:-
‘Children's Book Award’ in the picture book section, and was
shortlisted for the:- ‘Kate Greenaway Medal’ in 1997,
so you can expect a fantastic illustration or two in her books. They
are bright, and there is always a lot of life in the subjects she is
portraying. She allowed us a look at the book that will be released
on general sale in the UK on 17 October 2011. This new book,
called:- ‘Scariest Thing of All’, is a splendid book
and of the highest standard as you would expect to see in her work.
It is both fun and enjoyable; in easy to follow, story format as
well as having colourful illustrations on every page. Children who
receive this book for Halloween or for Christmas will be ‘made
up’, we are certain about that. After a very long day
visiting schools in and around Sefton and also popping in to Formby
Books, Debi told us:- "I spend a long time working on my ideas
and I love to meet the people I do the work for and find out if I
got it correct. It is always a joy to get feedback from my fans and
also to try to give something back to them. I hope my explanations
about how to draw will inspire others to take up the art. That is
what I aim to do when at schools and not just sell my stories."
We found Debi a fantastic person to talk to and look forward to
seeing her back on Merseyside soon. We had to ask what medium she
liked to use when doing her illustrations and she told us:-
"It is hard to say. I love ink and pencil for drawing, but I do have
a passion for crayon and charcoal as well." Ok, it was not a
definitive answer, but whatever she decided to use for her work all
her books are fantastic to look at, even if you are an adult. If you
do not know about this book’s story, it is aimed at young pre-school
children and early juvenile markets. The illustrated story is about
a little rabbit who has a seemingly endless list of things to be
afraid of. Even his family aren't sure how to help him overcome his
anxieties! One day, everything gets just about as bad as it can and
the little rabbit finally has to face his fears. In so doing, of
course, he realises that nothing is as big, bad or as terrifying as
it first appears. The story book is published by Bloomsbury
Publishing Plc. and is 32 pages packed full of action and colour
that will keep children engrossed for hours. If you want a signed
