Spring into  action for mums

BLOOD donors in Merseysideare being urged to  think about new mums, with Mother’s Day taking place on 18 March 2012.  NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is appealing for people to  give blood this month, with each donation potentially saving the lives of three adults or seven babies. One of the biggest uses for blood is to  help mothers and babies who suffer complications during childbirth.  It can also be used to  help premature babies, to  replace blood lost during surgery and to  treat patients with cancer and blood diseases like leukaemia.  Barbara Blanche, spokesperson for NHSBT, said:- "Everyone will be thinking about their mum this month.  We are asking them to  take it one step further and think about all the new mums, and babies, who need blood.  With Spring here we want existing donors and those who haven’t given before, to  spring into  action and give blood.  It really can save and transform the lives of mums and babies and many other patients."

Anyone wanting to  donate for the first time should be aged between 17 to  65, weighing at least 50 kg (7 sto ne 12lbs) and in general good health.  If you’ve donated before, you can start again up to  your 70th birthday and there is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last 2 years.

To  find out more about blood sessions in March or to  book an appointment call the Donor Line on:- 0300 123 23 23 or visit:- blood.co.uk.
