Over 300 events
in the North West to celebrate Climate Week
CLIMATE Week 2012 was an
overwhelming success in the North West with over 300 events taking
place from 12 to 18 March. Climate Week events were run by every
sector of society in the region from small and large businesses, to
local councils, schools and community groups.
Climate Week, Britain’s biggest climate change campaign is partnered
by Tesco, EDF Energy, H&M, Nissan and SodaStream, and aims to
inspire a new wave of action to create a sustainable future. The
2012 campaign culminated in over 3,000 events across the UK.
The success of the 2012 campaign comes as new research commissioned
by Climate Week reveals that 60% people in the North West say they
feel motivated to do something about climate change. 75% of people
also agreed that small actions, such as recycling or turning the
heating down, done by many people can make a difference.
In the North West, 70% people said climate change matters to them
even if the damaging effects happen after their lifetime. And 67%
felt that there was a lot of talk about climate change but not
enough action. 62% of people in the North West also believe
that it is not too much effort to be green, however, money is still
regarded as an obstacle with 26% of people saying that you need to
be rich to be truly green.
Kevin Steele, Chief Executive at Climate Week, said:- "Climate
Week is an annual renewal of our ambition to combat climate change
and create a more sustainable future. Our research shows that the
public has an appetite for action on climate change and the number
of events that took place in the North West is testament to their
motivation and commitment."
The Prime Minister, David Cameron said:- "I am extremely
pleased to support Britain’s second Climate Week. When I gave my
backing to the first Climate Week in 2011, we did not know what the
level of participation would be and whether there would be appetite
for joint action to help prevent and adapt to climate change. The
response was huge. Half a million people attended over 3,000 events,
making it Britain’s biggest ever environmental occasion and the
country’s largest climate change campaign.
Climate Week’s Headline Partner Tesco, and its Supporting Partners
EDF Energy, H&M, Nissan and SodaStream can be proud of the
campaign they have helped to create. They are also showing what is
possible in business; positive steps that will help us to combat
climate change while also creating new jobs, protecting our energy
security and building sustainable future prosperity for our
country."
Highlights of some of the 330 events which took place in the
North West include:-
Premiership football teams supporters include Manchester United,
Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers from undertaking energy saving
initiatives around the grounds, staff awareness days and encouraging
fans to travel to matches using public transport, cycling or
walking.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service ran a series of
sessions at a number of fire stations to provide free bike
health-checks.

R2D2 to drop into Vitalise
Southport centre in May. Star Wars legend Kenny Baker, who
played robot R2D2, is to make an appearance at the Sandpipers
respite holiday centre in Southport on Wednesday, 2 May 2012.
Kenny’s visit will be one of the highlights of Vitalise’s inaugural
Sci-fi Week at the Sandpipers centre.
Kenny, who gave life to the trusty R2D2 robot in all 6 of the
blockbuster Star Wars movies to date, will meet and mingle, sign
autographs and pose for photographs with the guests at the centre.
The people with disabilities and carers taking much-needed breaks at
Sandpipers during Sci-fi Week will be treated to an exciting
schedule of science and science-fiction related excursions and
activities during their stay.
The attractions include accessible excursions to Manchester Science
Museum, Jodrell Bank Observatory and Spaceport Visitor Centre, where
the guests will be able to take an amazing journey through our
universe at the centre’s Oasis in Space adventure.
Screenings of classic sci-fi films, including the Star Wars saga,
will complement the activities, while Kenny Baker’s personal
appearance will provide a fitting highlight to the week.
Darren Holloran, General Manager of Vitalise Sandpipers, said:-
"Like the Apollo missions, we were over the moon when Kenny
graciously agreed to drop into Sandpipers for our first ever Sci-fi
Week. He is a legend among Star Wars fans and film lovers the world
over.
As Mr Spock might say, ‘it’s a break, but not as we know it’ here at
Sandpipers. We pride ourselves on giving people with disabilities
and carers the same opportunities to see and try new things that
anyone else would expect when on holiday. We never see disability as
a barrier to experiencing all that life has to offer.
Sci-fi Week is just one of a whole range of exciting themed weeks we
have lined up for 2013, so set phasers to fun and engage warp drive;
it’s going to be out of this world!"
Vitalise still has a small number of vacancies on Sci-fi Week,
starting on 28 April 2012, at Sandpipers. The charity is advising those
who wish to book or request more information to contact the bookings
team on:- 0303 303 0145.
Vitalise is a national charity providing essential breaks for people
with disabilities and carers. Vitalise provides its short breaks,
with 24 hour nursing care on-call and personal support, at 3
accessible UK centres, all offering a wide range of activities and
excursions.

NEW Pleasureland will be
holding its official opening of Piranha River Ride, on Friday, 13
April 2012. The park's owner, Norman Wallis, said that:- "I am
looking forward to what will be our best season yet. We have come a
long way since I began my programme of investment to refurbishment
and development the attraction. We now have almost 100 rides plus
the fully refurbished indoor Casablanca family entertainment centre,
packed with amusements and newly available for children’s party
bookings. Inside there’s a soft-play area, junior dodgems and
carousels, a family restaurant and a lively games arcade. Outside
