Local St Helens
man to run London Marathon in aid of Coeliac UK
PETER McAleny, 38 from St
Helens is preparing to run in this year’s Virgin London Marathon on
the Sunday, 22 April 2012. He is running his first marathon to raise
funds for Coeliac UK, the national charity for people with coeliac
disease. His daughter was diagnosed with the condition five years
ago and Peter wanted to help raise funds and awareness of coeliac
disease.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease caused by intolerance to
gluten. Damage to the gut lining occurs when gluten is eaten. There
is no cure or medication for the condition; the only treatment is
lifelong, strict gluten-free diet. Without a gluten-free diet, the
disease can lead to other conditions, such as malnutrition,
osteoporosis, small bowel cancer and can cause infertility problems.
1 in 100 people in the UK have coeliac disease; however, only 10% to 15%
of those individuals have been diagnosed.
Peter said:- "I am running the London Marathon because I want
to raise funds for Coeliac UK. They have been a fantastic source of
help and advice since Emily’s diagnosis. I am delighted to have a
place in the Marathon through Coeliac UK this year. This is my
second marathon and training is going extremely well. I started off
with a target time of 4 hours 40 minutes but now I am hopeful to
break the 4 hours 20 minutes mark, at least that's what I am hoping
for! I have raised £1,500 to date and hope to break £2,000 come the
big day. I hope the funds raised will help towards any research that
may be undertaken so that living standards improve and are made
easier for those diagnosed with coeliac disease. I would also like
to see more awareness promotion in the food and catering industry."
To help raise awareness of the condition, Coeliac UK is holding a
campaign in May called the Gluten-free Challenge, asking the nation
to pledge support and do at least one thing gluten-free during
awareness week, which takes place between 14 May to 20 May 2012.

Brazilica is on
it's way back to Liverpool!
THE Brazilica, the vibrant
festival of Brazilian culture which brought Latin fever to Liverpool
last summer, attracting over 60,000
visitors to the city centre, is back for 2012! Organisers Liverpool
Carnival Company and Orb Events promise that this year’s event will
build on the success of the 2011 carnival, taking over the city in a
massive 3 day event from Friday, 13 July to Sunday, 15 July 2012.
Full details of all festival events including a 500 strong parade,
outdoor music stages featuring top authentic Brazilian acts, a
Carnival Ball and a high profile indoor gig will be released very
soon, so watch this space.
Brazilica has become one of the flagship events of the year in
Liverpool’s festival calendar; a colourful celebration of Brazilian
music, dance, culture, food and of course, football!
The Soccer Zone is set to be a key component of the 2012 programme.
Together with principal partners AFC Liverpool and LFC, Brazilica
will recreate the electric atmosphere of a Brazilian sports arena in
Liverpool ONE. The Soccer Zone will host a range of football
activities including skill-based coaching sessions, family fun
penalty shoot-outs and a freestyle competition. Brazilian sports
activities will also be on offer, whilst live samba bands and
dancers in sparkling costumes will entertain the crowds Rio style.
The Soccer Zone celebrates Liverpool and Brazil’s shared love of
football and also Great Britain and Brazil hosting sports events on
the world stage with the London Olympics 2012 and Brazil hosting the
World Cup 2014 and the 2016 Olympic Games.
On Monday, 9 April 2012, a celebration at the home ground of AFC
Liverpool will officially launch the Soccer Zone 2012 – when the
irresistible sound of St Peters and Paul’s Samba Band and a
glamour-packed performance from the Brazilica Carnival Queen Dancers
will provide pre-match and half time entertainment that’s guaranteed
to warm up the crowd!
Maeve Morris, Artistic Director of Liverpool Carnival Company,
said:- "We were delighted at the success of last year’s
Brazilica - seeing it grow into Britain’s biggest Brazilian carnival
was a proud moment. We’re excited to make it even bigger for 2012
and hope that the many thousands of visitors who enjoyed the 2011
festival will return this year along with lots of new faces. It’s an
unrivalled chance to experience Brazilian culture, music, food and
sport in the UK."
Councillor Wendy Simon, Liverpool City Council cabinet member for
Culture and Tourism, said:- "Brazilica brings colour, music
and excitement to our streets. Its parade was one of the highlights
of the summer for many thousands of people last year and we are very
pleased that it is returning this summer. It is going from strength
to strength and shows the diversity and vibrancy of our city."
