Southport
campaigners meet John Pugh MP about diabetes healthcare
DIABETIES campaigners from Southport, on
Tuesday, 15 May 2012, met with John Pugh MP to ask him to demand
improvements to healthcare for people with the condition.
Jackie Martin and Angela Bevington travelled to London to meet Mr
Pugh as part of a lobbying event organised by Diabetes UK.
They asked him to make the case to local NHS leaders to make
diabetes a higher priority and to write to the Government to demand
an implementation plan for improving diabetes healthcare nationally.
This follows the publication of the charity's State of the Nation
report, which has found poor diabetes care across the country.
Jackie said:- "We were delighted to meet John Pugh as it gave
us the chance to raise our concerns about poor diabetes healthcare
in Southport and across the country. Diabetes is one of the biggest
health challenges we face in the UK but too many people with
diabetes locally and across the country are not getting the basic
checks and services they need to manage their condition. We made the
case to Mr Pugh that local NHS managers need to give diabetes a
higher priority if we are to improve care in Southport. We also
asked him to write to Paul Burstow MP, Minister for Care Services,
to ask the Government for a national implementation plan to deliver
improved diabetes healthcare services. The fact that he has met with
us is a positive sign but we now need them to take action and we
hope to continue working with him on this issue. As the NHS goes
through many challenges and changes, it is essential that the voices
of people with diabetes are heard."
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommends that
people with diabetes should get a series of nine checks and
services, which include measuring blood glucose levels, blood
pressure, cholesterol, eyes, feet and kidneys.
These standards of care form the basis of Diabetes UK's 15
Healthcare Essentials, which the charity believes should be offered
and provided to every person with diabetes, no matter where they
live in the country.

better diabetes healthcare at:-
