Politicians to
face questions on race equality in Liverpool
A group of senior politicians, including a
government minister, are to be quizzed on race equality in Liverpool
and the North West... On Thursday, 19 July 2012, between 7pm and
9pm, the group will be taking part in "Race Equality Question
Time" at Liverpool's iconic International Slavery Museum.
The politicians taking part include Race Equality Minister and
Liberal Democrat MP Andrew Stunell, local Labour MP and Shadow
Education spokesperson Stephen Twigg and Wirral West Conservative MP
Esther McVey. They will be joined on the panel by local community
activists.
The event will take the format of "BBC Question Time",
but with all questions focused on the theme of race equality in the
North West rather than the television show's broader approach. It is
being organised by the regional charity One North West and national
race equality charity the Runnymede Trust, a research organisation
which also runs the All Party Parliamentary Group on Race and
Community
It follows a series of other successful "Race Equality
Question Time" events held around the country, including in
Birmingham, Norwich and Edinburgh.
Commenting, Runnymede Director Rob Berkeley said:- "Given
Liverpool's long history of ethnic diversity, we are delighted to be
bringing Race Equality Question Time to the city. With inequalities
between different ethnic groups increasing, particularly in
employment and the criminal justice system, it is important that the
people of Liverpool and their representatives have their say on the
solutions to ongoing racial inequality and injustice."
Dan Silver from One North West said:- "Liverpool is home to
many leading race equality organisations, and the city is an
excellent place to host this debate on how we can move forward in
these challenging times."
IS 19 JULY YOUR BIRTHDAY TOO?
THE Museum of Liverpool will be celebrating
its first birthday, marking the day the doors were opened to the
public just 1 year ago, on 19 July 2011.
Having welcomed more than 1.2 million people in its first 12 months,
staff at National Museums Liverpool want to share this special day
with even more visitors, particularly those who are also celebrating
a birthday on 19 July 2012.
If you are a birthday boy or girl; regardless of how old you are;
and it's your birthday on 19 July 2012, then the Museum of Liverpool
team would love to hear from you!
Call:- 0151 478 4355 if you are available on the afternoon of
Thursday, 19 July 2012, to help us cut the cake, and share the fun.
You will need proof on the day to confirm that it's your birthday,
so a birth certificate would be great, or a birthday badge will do!
Activities will be taking place throughout the afternoon on
Thursday, 19 July 2012; for everyone to come along to celebrate and
mark the milestone. There will also be a Crafternoon session on
Sunday, 15 July 2012; from 2pm to 4:30pm for visitors to make
birthday cards for the Museum.
The Museum of Liverpool is the largest newly built national museum
in Britain for more than a century, and it's certainly had its fair
share of highlights over the past year. After the doors opened on 19
July 2011 to the first visitors, even The Queen and The Duke of
Edinburgh made the trip to the Museum in December, amongst other
high profile visitors.
The Royal couple opened the Museum's newest galleries, which display
large objects including the last surviving Liverpool Overhead
Railway carriage, the Lion locomotive and items from The King's
Regiment collection.
Visitors have been flocking to see the unique range of objects and
exhibitions on display, from the stage where John Lennon and Paul
McCartney first met, to the life size Liver Bird and the first Ford
Anglia. The newest object featured in the Wondrous Place gallery,
Chris Boardman's Olympic Gold Medal won for cycling in the Men's
Individual Pursuit at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, will be on
display from Thursday; 12 July 2012. |
