CRIME PREVENTION
ADVICE - SEFTON
OVER the past month, there
has been a decrease in the number of reported burglaries when
compared to the same period last year (2011).
However there has been an increase in the number of offences,
resulting from front doors, which aren't properly locked. This
coincides with an increase in the number of theft from motor
vehicles, which were left unlocked.
Almost a third of all burglaries reported to the police in the past
3 months have involved the offender entering through an insecure
door or window. The most common point of entry are front doors,
followed by back or kitchen doors, and detectives are urging people
to keep them locked at all times, whether they are in the house or
have gone out.
Detective Inspector John Williams from Marsh Lane CID, said UPVC
doors were a particular problem. He said:- "Many new doors,
especially UPVC ones, need to have both the handle pushed up and the
key turned in order to be fully locked and unfortunately people are
forgetting to do this or are wrongly assuming that the doors are
properly secure if slammed shut without turning the key. This means
that burglars need just a few seconds to be able to easily get in
and steal people's hard-earned possessions. I would urge every
resident in Sefton to make sure that they are properly locking their
front and back doors whether they are out or not. Burglars are
largely opportunistic and will think nothing trying door handles of
every house in a street in the hope of getting lucky. I would call
on residents to work with the local Police to make life for burglars
as unlucky and difficult as possible. A number of streets in the
borough have had more than one burglary occur in the past 3 months.
Areas of Sefton where burglaries of insecure homes have been most
common since May are Crosby, Litherland and Southport. Neighbourhood
patrols have been stepped up at key times in these areas and
operations targeting known or prolific burglars are being carried
out. A great deal of work is constantly going on to tackle burglary
and we have had significant successes in putting prolific offenders
before the courts. Burglary remains one of our priorities in Sefton
and we will keep trying to raise awareness about how people can keep
their homes and cars secure."
We understand how upsetting and frightening being burgled can be.
Most burglars pick houses that look empty or insecure. There are a
number of things you can do to help keep your home safe, such as:-
► Locking your windows and doors when you
go out or go to bed.
► Using your house alarm if you've got
one. Light timer switches are a good idea too.
► Making sure you lock your UPVC door
properly if you have one; remember to lift the handle, turn the key
and then remove it.
► Keeping your valuables out of sight,
away from your windows and doors e.g. car keys, laptops, mobile
phones, purse/ wallet.
► Locking your shed and/ or garage if you
have one.
► Fitting a letterbox restrictor to your
front door.
► Using a UV pen to mark your valuable
items with your postcode and house number. This will help us to
return these items to you, should they ever be stolen and later
found.
► Check to ensure that you leave your
vehicle properly secure, as pressing the remote doesn't always mean
that it is locked.

FAMILY OF JAMES
STANTON APPEAL FOR CLOSURE ON THE 6TH ANNIVERSARY
THE family of murdered
grandfather from Thornton, James Stanton, have appealed for answers
on the 6th anniversary of murder.
James Stanton, aged 58, was shot while in his business premises,
Aintree Commercial Vehicles, Ormskirk Road, Aintree on 24 July 2006.
His widow Jean has appealed for anyone with information to talk to
police. She said:- "It is now 6 years since Jim's death and we
still don't have the answers we need as a family to help us move on
and get some closure. I'd ask anyone who can help to please contact
the Police."
Detectives investigating his murder have reissued an appeal for
anyone with information to come forward. Police believe two men
could be responsible for the murder and that they left the scene in
a blue Toyota Avensis (registration DM53 MKK), stolen from Sefton
Street two months before the murder and found burnt out on Blindfoot
Road, Rainford.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Brunskill said:- "6 years on
and Mr Stanton's family need to see those responsible brought to
justice so they can start to rebuild their lives. We are appealing
for anyone who may have seen the car between 25 May and the murder,
bearing in mind that the car may not have been bearing its original
number plates at the time of the shooting. The incident happened on
a busy route from the city centre at rush hour and I would appeal
directly to anyone who was around at the time, either on foot or in
a car to cast their mind back and let us know if they saw anything
at all unusual. In particular we would like to speak to a woman with
children, who stood near to the getaway vehicle when the offenders
fled from the scene. We would also like to speak to a man who was on
a pedal bike, who indirectly contacted the investigation team. We
believe that this man may have been on Ormskirk Road during the
shooting and may have witnessed part of the incident, we would urge
him to come forward."
