Formby Royal
British Legion is 90 this year
THE Formby Royal British
Legion this year is celebrating its 90th Anniversary. The Formby
Royal British Legion has been one of the main voluntary groups who
have been pivotal to many of the villages large events, military and
non military over the years as well. It was also played host to the
main the North West 50th Anniversary of VE/VJ celebrations. Major
Roy Bevan MBE, took these fantastic photographs for us, over the
branches celebrations, that took place on 28 July 2012. He
also told us that:- "The Royal British Legion in Formby, this
month celebrates 90 years since 1st founded, this being 1 year after
the national charity was formed to support the injured military who
suffered through conflicts since the first world war, plus also
their families in need. To celebrate this historic occasion they
held a Church Service at Holy Trinity Formby, the Service being
conducted by the Reverend Mark Stanford. Prior to the Service, RBL
Standard Bearers paraded through the Village preceded by the
Marshside Band and supported by Veterans, Formby Army Cadets and Air
Cadets from RAF Woodvale. The Service was held with the Lord
Lieutenant of Merseyside attending, Dame Lorna Muirhead and her
husband Ronald, the Sefton Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Kevin and
Linda Cluskey, Colonel Graeme Bryson, Life President, Colonel Sir
Alan and Lady Waterworth, President West Lancashire County. Also
supporting were Officers from Liverpool University Training Corps at
RAF Woodvale and also members of Formby, St. John Ambulance. During
the Service Bugler Dave Culshaw sounded the Last Post. The Parade
then returned through the Village, supported by local Police, the
Salute being taken by the VIP's. Everyone then returned to their
Headquarters at Whitehouse Lane to listen to the Band and for a
Buffet. A Celebration 90 Cake was cut by the Lord Lieutenant
together with the RBL President, Cyril Goulbourne. The Chairman, Ken
Ward, in his Thank You speech, was pleased to point out that all the
premises there are owned nationally by the RBL, but he was pleased
to advise that in respect to the Club part, a lease has been signed
with a new investor and all facilities plus new ones will continue.
He also thanked everyone for their greatly valued support especially
with the RBL Poppy Appeal." to find out more about the
