Housing plan to
support older people
LIVERPOOL is to upgrade 3
sheltered housing complexes so they provide 'extra care'
round the clock support to older people. A report to the Mayor's
Cabinet is recommending investing £255,000 on an additional 260
units of Extra Care Housing (ECH) for older people. It will
bring to 5 the total number of schemes to 5, and the plan is to have
them spread across the City; 2 in the North, 2 in the Centre and 1
in the South. Residents will have their own tenancies and
access to a range of communal facilities such as a restaurant,
hairdresser and access to activities. They will offer integrated
housing, care and support packages with 24 hour assistance for
people with a range of needs, offering more independence than being
cared for in residential homes.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said:- "People in our City
are living longer which is great news, but it brings with it
additional pressures on services because we have a growing older
population who need our help and support. We need to make sure we
are in a position to respond to the challenges that this will bring
and I want us to be able to offer good quality and accessible
housing where people can live in safety and comfort but retain their
independence. We are facing some extremely tough choices over the
next few years due to cuts in funding from central government and it
is vital we create a streamlined care system targeting our resources
at the most vulnerable."
Liverpool spends almost £62 million a year on care for older people,
with the Extra Care budget making up £2.3 million of the total. m
Assistant Mayor and Cabinet member for adult social care and health,
Councillor Roz Gladden added:- "This is a long term commitment
from the City to making sure that older people are at the heart of
our thinking and planning around services and aren't left isolated.
We are already investing heavily in creating new health and social
care hubs at Venmore, Sedgemoor and Granby to support people who
have strokes, dementia and those needing support to get back to full
fitness after illness. The Extra Care Housing schemes will enhance
the value and effectiveness of the hubs."
The report will be considered by
the Mayor's Cabinet on Friday, 17 August 2012.

Olympic Handover
Team Host Games After Party in Southport – Brazilian Style!
THIS summer's Olympics in
London have been a smash hit, but now they are over plans are
already afoot for the next Games – Rio 2016. The Olympic Closing
Ceremony was as equally impressive as its groundbreaking Opening
Ceremony, and was a time to celebrate sporting achievements as well
as Britain's unique culture. As part of the Rio Flag Handover
between Great Britain and Brazil, a team of British dancers and
performers got into the Brazilian spirit to perform at the Closing
Ceremony yesterday, and they will be back in what has become the
world's most famous stadium on the 9th September for the
Paralympics. They will be entertaining a crowd of over 80,000 as
well as being broadcast to a huge global audience. Both events are the most
visible
celebrations of Brazilian culture in London's history, and
their
party spirit is in keeping with the celebratory nature of the
world's most prestigious sporting events.
The Ceremonias Cariocas 2016 Team have carried out an intensive
campaign over recent months to find London's most capable volunteer
performers. They have recruited samba dancers, drummers and
percussionists, and samba de gafieira performers from all over the
London area. Over 66% of this impressive Olympic and Paralympic Cast
are involved in Samba schools here in the U.K. and the talent scouts
have been overwhelmed by the outstanding calibre of talent they have
discovered.
No-one is more pleased to be involved in the celebrations than
Simone Reeves. She took the journey from Liverpool to London to
audition and made it through to the Passista group, the lead dancers
in the group performance. Thousands applied to get into the
Passistas, but only 20 dancers were chosen, and they now make up
part of the 3000 strong Cast. Simone has had an amazing time
meeting dancers all over the globe in London but, despite the tough
rehearsal schedule, she is thrilled to be involved in these unique
Olympic ceremonies. She says:- "It has been hard travelling
back and forth to London, but it is the opportunity of a lifetime
for me. I am delighted to take part in these historical events and
as well as representing my country I am also flying the flag for the
North West!"
Everyone in the region can enjoy their own taste of that lightning
Rio culture on the 23 August 2012, at the Brazilica Handover Party,
complete with Olympic Champions, no less! A list of winning VIPs is
already confirmed, and the Champions will be bringing along their
medals to add some metallic magic to proceedings, all in aid of The
Steven Gerrard Foundation. Starting off with cocktails and canapés
at the V Cafe at the Vincent Hotel, Southport, the party will move
onto a 3 course dinner and after party at the Warehouse. The
region's two most stylish venues are proud to be involved with such
a fun-filled event, which will include live entertainment from the
Olympics 2012 Brazilian dancers and performers. It promises to a
spirited evening full of winning moments that guests will be talking
about for a long time to come.
